We offer flexible remote working with regular travel as required. To support a strong induction, you will spend at least two weeks at our Isleham, Cambridgeshire headquarters. Ongoing, you will attend monthly team meetings in Isleham.
Steel Bones is a friendly, ambitious charity supporting amputees and their families. We’re looking for a Business Development / Marketing Manager to help grow the charity and increase diversity in our community.
This is a rewarding, varied, and demanding role: perfect for an experienced professional or someone earlier in their career with strong drive, initiative, and a passion for people and inclusion. If you love building relationships with people and organisations, seeing tangible impact, and helping set the strategy for a charity that truly changes lives, this role is for you.
Steel Bones is a fast growing UK charity supporting over 1,800 amputees and their families across England and Wales. Founded in 2014, we provide free practical and emotional support including peer mentoring, benefits and housing advocacy, careers guidance, youth programmes, school workshops, and a growing network of local meet‑ups.
We also host national Celebration Days and youth events to reduce isolation and build confidence. Run by a small but dedicated team supported by volunteers and ambassadors, Steel Bones is expanding rapidly to ensure no amputee faces limb loss alone.
About the role
You’ll be a self-starter combining strategic thinking with hands‑on delivery, helping expand our reach in the UK, supporting NHS and partner networks, launching new local groups, and increasing membership diversity. Every decision you make and project you lead will directly improve the lives of amputees and their families.
Stakeholder Relationships
* Represent the charity at meetings of all levels (NHS Trusts, Limb clinics, sector partners) to develop collaborations and referrals.
* Expand engagement into diverse communities, increasing national reach and awareness.
* Act as an ambassador, clearly communicating the charity’s mission, impact and future vision.
Events & Initiatives
* Launch new initiatives to expand geographic reach and community impact.
* Measure and evaluate impact to inform growth and strategy.
Marketing & Communications
* Work with the CEO to define a national marketing and communications strategy and lead the delivery.
* Strengthen brand presence, media visibility and audience growth using analytics and insights.
* Ensure inclusive, accessible and authentic representation in all communications.
A typical day at Steel Bones
This role is based at the HQ in Isleham. Mornings often involve meeting people who make a difference including NHS teams, volunteers, fundraisers, or supporters. Seeing someone’s confidence grow after connecting with the right support is incredibly fulfilling.
Afternoons are a mix of strategy and creativity: launching new local groups, planning events, shaping marketing campaigns, updating the website, or building new partnerships. You’ll also focus on diversity and inclusion, helping Steel Bones reach under‑represented communities and broaden its impact.
It’s a challenging but hugely rewarding role, demanding in scope but rich in opportunities to lead, innovate, and shape the charity’s future. By the end of the day, you’ll leave inspired, knowing your work has made a real difference.
Person specification
Strong people and relationship‑building skills.
* A good understanding of marketing principles and social media.
* Highly organised, proactive, and able to manage multiple priorities.
* Commitment to inclusion and equality.
* Confidence engaging with professionals, volunteers, and service users.
* Flexible approach, including occasional evenings or weekends.
* Willingness to travel and a full UK driving licence.
* GCSE English and Maths or equivalent.
* Lived experience of limb difference.
* Experience of working within the not‑for‑profit sector.
