Senior Engineer (SuDS/Planning) – Drainage & Flood Risk Management team – 05660
West Berkshire Council is seeking an experienced engineer to advise the Local Planning Authority on sustainable urban drainage systems (SuDS), flood risk management, and land drainage.
Responsibilities
* Provide professional and technical services in drainage projects under the guidance of the Asset Manager and Principal Engineer.
* Promote sustainable drainage and support the Council’s role as a Lead Local Flood Authority.
* Respond to consultation requests from the Planning Department for flood risk and drainage advice, reviewing applications and encouraging the use of SuDS in line with the National Planning Policy Framework, CIRIA C753, and other relevant guidance.
* Collaborate with the Highway Authority and Planning Department to ensure development contributions are secured under Section 106 and relevant Highways Act sections.
* Maintain flood risk and drainage assets on the council’s registers and manage ordinary Watercourse Consents in accordance with the Land Drainage Act 1991.
* Assist with the asset management database and lead flood management initiatives and projects.
* Seek opportunities for SuDS and Natural Flood Management schemes and apply for grants, for example from the Thames Regional Flood and Coastal Committee.
Qualifications
* Relevant engineering qualification and professional accreditation (e.g., a degree with at least 3 years’ experience, or a BTEC Higher National Certificate in Civil Engineering with 5 years’ experience).
* Significant experience in sustainable drainage, land drainage and flood risk management, with a strong understanding of legislation and standards.
* Proven technical knowledge of the National Planning Policy Framework.
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, able to liaise effectively with stakeholders.
* Strong problem‑solving and analytical abilities.
* Experience supervising and mentoring junior staff.
