Role Description

The role is responsible for protecting, maximising and enforcing the Company’s intellectual property rights, including inventions, designs, and processes, through effective patenting strategies, patent prosecution and robust litigation. This role will drive high‑stake patent disputes, initiate litigation and defend aggressively against infringement claims.

The role requires a commercially astute lawyer who thrives in high‑pressure, adversarial environments, is confident making rapid, high‑impact decisions, and can manage disputes through to decisive resolution across multiple jurisdictions.


Key Responsibilities

* Provide expert legal advice on all aspects of intellectual property, with a focus on patents, alongside trademarks and design rights.
* Assess inventions for patentability, validity, and commercial value, advising on strategic protection.
* Conduct prior art searches, freedom‑to‑operate (FTO), and infringement risk analyses.
* Draft high‑quality patent specifications and claims with a view to both protection and enforceability in litigation.
* File, prosecute, and manage patent applications before the UKIPO, EPO, and other international patent offices.
* Respond to examination reports, oppositions, and office actions across jurisdictions.
* Lead and manage patent disputes, including infringement and validity proceedings.
* Initiate enforcement actions and develop litigation strategies aligned with commercial objectives.
* Defend the organisation against third‑party infringement claims, coordinating legal and technical responses.
* Manage pre‑action strategy, evidence gathering, expert witnesses, and case development.
* Support settlement negotiations, licensing disputes, and alternative dispute resolution (ADR).
* Monitor competitor activity and identify potential infringement risks or enforcement opportunities.
* Develop and implement global IP enforcement strategies.
* Align patent portfolio development with litigation readiness and commercial positioning.


Stakeholder Collaboration

* Partner with R&D, engineering, and commercial teams to embed IP strategy into innovation pipelines.
* Advise senior stakeholders on IP risk, dispute exposure, and enforcement strategy.
* Translate complex legal and technical issues into clear, actionable business guidance.


Key Skills

* Advanced patent drafting skills with litigation‑ready claim construction.
* Strong advocacy mindset and experience in contentious legal environments.
* Excellent legal reasoning, particularly in infringement and validity analysis.
* High‑level research and patent search capability.
* Strong written and oral advocacy, including persuasive argument development.
* Ability to manage complex, multi‑jurisdictional disputes.
* Commercially focused decision‑making under pressure.
* Strong case management and organisational skills.


Key Experience & Qualifications

* Degree in a STEM discipline (e.g., engineering, physics, chemistry, or similar).
* Qualified and registered Patent Attorney (UK and/or European).
* Demonstrated experience in patent drafting, filing, and prosecution.
* Proven experience in patent litigation, disputes, or contentious IP matters.
* Strong knowledge of UK, European, and international patent systems.
* Strategic Thinking – Integrates prosecution and litigation to maximise IP value.
* Analytical Judgement – Evaluates complex legal and technical risks effectively.
* Advocacy & Influence – Persuades stakeholders, courts, and counterparties.
* Resilience Under Pressure – Performs in high‑stakes, adversarial situations.
* Commercial Acumen – Aligns legal strategy with business outcomes.
* Collaboration – Works seamlessly across technical and commercial teams.
* Decisiveness – Makes timely, high‑quality decisions in fast‑moving disputes.


Additional Requirements

* Ability to manage multiple high‑priority matters in a fast‑paced, contentious environment.
* Willingness to travel for litigation and international coordination where required.
