The Opportunity
We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Lead Bridge Engineer to join our Amey Consulting team in Manchester, Newcastle, or Sheffield, with shared office space, attending the office when necessary, and remaining days working remotely. We welcome applications from Lead Engineers across this region.
Our Amey Consulting Structures Team designs some of the largest civil engineering and infrastructure projects across Scotland, with cumulative values exceeding £1bn.
Amey manages both the Southwest and Northeast Trunk Road Network Management contracts, awarded in 2020 and 2022 respectively, each extending up to 12 years. We also have a diverse portfolio of major roads, bridges, and transportation projects with Transport Scotland, Local Authorities, and contractors nationwide.
These long-term contracts offer excellent opportunities for technical, engineering, and professional development at all career stages, involving some of Scotland’s most exciting engineering projects.
The role
The Lead Bridge Engineer plays a vital role within the Design team and in collaboration with Transport Scotland. As a Lead Senior Engineer, you will support your Design Team Leader across various civil schemes, lead projects, and mentor junior designers.
Responsibilities include:
* Leading a team to produce technically sound engineering solutions, complying with all standards and client requirements.
* Preparing and reviewing designs, calculations, drawings, and documentation to meet quality, cost, and schedule criteria.
* Overseeing junior staff and ensuring accountability for their work.
* Managing project budgets and controlling costs to ensure commercial success.
* Liaising with clients and suppliers, attending meetings, and responding to queries.
* Contributing to bids and business development activities.
* Promoting health and safety practices within the team.
What you will bring to us:
* Experience and expertise in civil engineering, likely at a Senior Engineer level or equivalent.
* Ability to produce compliant, high-quality engineering solutions independently and supervise others.
* Knowledge of health, safety, and welfare management, including relevant regulations and systems.
* Capability to act as main engineering contact on projects, e.g., CRE for Network Rail schemes.
* Understanding of design and specification processes, with the ability to review and check designs.
* Proficiency with relevant software and analytical tools, with good review skills.
* Strong understanding of CDM and risk management, with experience in hazard and risk communication.
* Capability to serve as Principal Designer on suitable projects.
* People management skills, capable of leading a medium-sized, discipline-specific team.
* Incorporated or Chartered status or equivalent professional registration is desirable and may be essential for certain contracts.
