You must demonstrate how you meet the criteria by the closing date for applications unless the criteria state otherwise.
The stage in the process when the criteria will be measured is outlined below.
Shortlisting will be carried out on the basis of the essential criteria set out in Section 1 below, using the information provided by you on your application form.
Please note that the Selection Panel reserves the right to shortlist only those applicants that it believes most strongly meet the criteria for the role.
In the event of an excessive number of applications, the Selection Panel also reserves the right to apply any desirable criteria as outlined in Section 3 at shortlisting, in which case these will be applied in the order listed. It is important therefore that you also clearly demonstrate on your application form how you meet any desirable criteria.
Essential Criteria
* Hold a teaching qualification which meets the requirements for recognition to teach in grant‑aided schools in Northern Ireland.
* Hold a degree (minimum 2:1) in an English‑related subject.
* Demonstrate a minimum of 6 months’ paid experience of teaching GCSE English within the last 6 years.
* Be registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up post.
* Knowledge of Northern Ireland Curriculum.
* Knowledge and understanding of Safeguarding and Child Protection policy/practice.
* Knowledge of the SEND Code of Practice.
* Knowledge of a range of teaching strategies to meet the learning needs of pupils.
* Knowledge of Information Technology systems such as digital classroom tools/media and the use of tablets/mobile technologies.
* Knowledge of current assessment methods to inform teaching.
* Effective teaching and classroom management skills to inspire and challenge pupils to raise achievement.
* Proven ability to provide a supportive, inclusive learning environment.
* Ability to work collaboratively to promote positive relationships with pupils, colleagues, parents, and the wider community.
* Ability to work as an effective member of a team, and to motivate self and others.
* Evidence of how your experience and approach to work reflect the School’s Values/ethos.
Desirable Criteria
* Demonstrate experience of teaching A-Level English.
* Demonstrate the ability to teach GCSE History.
* Demonstrate training and/or experience of using data (e.g. PTE, PTM and PASS) to ensure that the needs of all pupils are met.
* Demonstrable experience of using digital media/technology to enhance teaching and learning.
* Experience of developing and delivering extracurricular activities.
Disclosure of Criminal Background
The Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups (Northern Ireland) Order 2007 defines working directly with children or young people or in specified places as ‘regulated activity’. In the event that you are recommended for appointment to a post that involves ‘regulated activity’, the Education Authority will be required to undertake an Enhanced Disclosure of Criminal Background. Please note that you will be expected to meet the cost of an Enhanced Disclosure Certificate.
Professional Duties of a Teacher
* Exercise of general professional duties:
o If employed as a teacher in a school under the reasonable direction of the principal.
o If employed by a board on terms under which the teacher is not assigned to any one school, under the reasonable direction of that board and of the principal.
* Exercise of particular duties:
o Perform, in accordance with any directions reasonably given by the principal, particular duties as may be assigned.
* Planning and preparing courses and lessons; teaching according to their educational needs; setting and marking pupils’ work; assessing, recording and reporting pupils’ development, progress and attainment.
* General duties:
o Promoting the general progress and well‑being of pupils and any class or group.
o Providing advice and guidance to pupils on educational and social matters.
o Making records of and reports on pupils’ personal and social needs.
o Communicating and consulting with parents.
o Communicating and co‑operating with approved outside bodies.
o Participating in meetings arranged for any of the above purposes.
* Assessment and reporting:
o Providing or contributing to oral and written assessments, reports and references for pupils and groups.
* Staff development and professional development:
o Participating in any scheme of staff development and performance review.
o Reviewing teaching methods and programmes of work.
o Participating in arrangements for further training.
o Advising and cooperating with the principal and other teachers on preparation and development of courses, materials, and pastoral arrangements.
* Discipline and health and safety:
o Maintaining good order and discipline, safeguarding health and safety on school premises and in authorised activities elsewhere.
o Participating in meetings on curriculum, administration, or pastoral arrangements.
* Public examinations:
o Participating in arrangements for preparing pupils for public examinations and assessing pupils for the purposes of such examinations; recording and reporting assessments; supervising examinations.
* Review and development of management activities/administration:
o Contributing to the selection and professional development of other teachers, including induction of probationary teachers.
o Co‑ordinating or managing the work of other teachers.
o Participating in the review, development and management of curriculum, organisation and pastoral functions.
o Participating in administrative and organisational tasks related to these duties, including ordering and allocating equipment and materials.
o Attending assemblies and registering pupils’ attendance; supervising pupils during activities.
* Number of days/hours of work:
o A full‑time teacher shall be available for work on 195 days in any year, not more than 190 days involving teaching in a classroom; the remainder may be for other duties.
o Additional duties may require specific hours as specified by the Principal.
* Staff cover:
o Providing supervising and teaching cover for absent teachers, subject to enrolment thresholds and periods of absence.
