Job overview
The successful applicant will be an experienced cancer nurse with proven clinical skills and knowledge in the field of cancer and a commitment to providing the highest standard of care to Breast Cancer patients. Strong communication skills are required to impart complex information to patients, relatives, and carers.
Main duties of the job
* Manage own clinical caseload, providing highly specialist nursing input and continuity of care at each stage of the pathway (diagnosis, treatment, surveillance and long‑term follow‑up).
* Act as the key worker for adults with breast cancer, supporting medical and clinical oncologists and delivering CNS services to MDT clinics.
* Participate in service development and adapt care delivery in line with national guidelines.
* Provide expert nursing support before, during and after treatment, including outpatients, inpatients, telephone advice and triage.
* Lead patient education and counselling at all stages of the pathway from entry into oncology service.
* Support the development of nurse‑led clinics for treatment and follow‑up, ensuring patients and carers fully understand treatment options, risks and side effects.
* Contribute to stratified follow‑up pathways in accordance with national best‑practice guidance.
* Take a lead role in MDT clinics, participating in discussion and decision making and ensuring efficient implementation of clinical decisions and care pathways.
* Work with the MDT and other CNS colleagues to establish measurable standards of care, using nursing audit and other measurement tools.
* Lead the delivery of timely holistic needs assessments (HNAs).
* Identify patients with complex needs early and liaise with referring teams both internal and external to UCLH.
* Build key working relationships with other specialities such as palliative care for patients at end of life and/or those with complex symptoms.
* Build key working relationships with primary care, including general practitioners and community palliative care teams.
* Develop knowledge of expected toxicities of routine and novel treatments.
* Provide educational sessions and mentorship to junior nursing staff.
* Attend and speak at network, regional and national meetings.
* Attend team meetings with CNS and Breast MDT colleagues to plan and evaluate the specialist nursing service, and facilitate case discussion and support.
* Attend relevant divisional and other meetings (including Cancer CNS community of practice) as agreed with manager.
Person specification
Knowledge and Qualifications
* BSc/1st degree (health related) or equivalent qualification/training and experience.
* Post‑registration qualification in appropriate area of speciality or equivalent post‑qualification experience.
* Leadership training or course completed.
Experience
* Previous experience of student supervision and clinical education at undergraduate level.
* Experience of working autonomously at an advanced level within the specialist area delivering effective patient‑focused care.
* Proven evidence of management and leadership skills and autonomous practice.
Skills and Abilities
* Excellent listening and counselling skills, able to manage complex situations and deliver sensitive and difficult outcomes appropriately.
* Evidence of teaching skills, especially teaching patients how to manage their condition and raise awareness.
* Ability to clinically lead and influence staff.
* Up‑to‑date knowledge of current clinical and professional issues.
* Sound knowledge of nursing practice and current issues in the profession.
* Strong time‑management and organisation skills.
* Clinical, managerial, and leadership skills within the specialty.
* Proficient in history taking and physical assessment to direct patient care.
* Capability to conduct and evaluate independent projects successfully.
* Capability to carry out audit and research.
