About the Role
We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Design Estimator to join our team in the fire and security sector. The successful candidate will be responsible for producing accurate and competitive cost estimates and system designs for a wide range of fire alarm, intruder alarm, CCTV, access control, and integrated life safety systems. This role is key in ensuring profitable project delivery through accurate take-offs, system compliance, and well-prepared proposals.
Key responsibilities and accountabilities
Estimating & Costing
- Develop detailed and accurate cost estimates based on client specifications, site surveys, and tender documents.
- Create Bill of Materials (BOMs) and detailed breakdowns for labour, materials, and subcontractors.
System Design
- Design fire detection, security, and integrated systems to current standards (e.g., BS 5839, BS 6266, BS EN 50131, NSI, etc.).
- Produce system schematics, layout drawings, and specification compliance documentation using AutoCAD or other design tools.
- Ensure all designs meet relevant standards, client requirements, and project scope.
Tender and Proposal Support
- Assist in the preparation of bid packages and formal proposals for clients.
- Provide technical support to sales and project teams during the pre- and post-bid process.
- Attend site visits or client meetings when required to gather necessary design and costing information.
Collaboration
- Work closely with project managers, engineers, and the sales team to ensure alignment of design, pricing, and delivery.
- Liaise with external consultants, main contractors, and end-users as needed.
Key Competencies
● Proven experience in estimating and/or system design within the fire and security industry.
● Strong knowledge of fire detection, security alarm systems, access control, and CCTV products and standards.
● Familiarity with relevant UK codes and regulations (e.g., BS 5839, BS 7671, NSI/BAFE standards).
● Strong analytical, numerical, and technical writing skills.
● Excellent attention to detail and time management.
● Ability to read technical drawings, specifications, and schematics.
Desirable Qualifications
● Proven experience (5+ years) in design estimation or sales in the fire and security industry.
● FIA or equivalent fire system design certification.
● Proficiency in AutoCAD, Microsoft Office Suite, and estimating software
● Valid full UK driving license
