At Severn Trent, we're embarking on an exciting £415m project to replace 870 miles of old water pipes across the Midlands - and we want you to be part of it. This is the biggest investment in water infrastructure in the region in a decade, set to improve water quality, reduce leaks, and make water supply more reliable for millions of people. The new pipes we install will last up to 100 years.
To bring this project to life, we are creating new jobs across the region, based in Birmingham, Nottingham, or anywhere in between. We have opportunities for you to help shape the future of water in the Midlands.
We are looking for a Network Construction Operative to work as part of a team to successfully deliver Mains Renewal construction activity at a specific site within one of the four regions (North, South, East, and West).
EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW
As a Network Construction Operative, your key role will be to ensure we provide good, wholesome water with minimal disruption to our customers.
You will undertake significant, large-scale construction activities on-site in a single location, including excavation, installation, testing, and commissioning of new mains and assets.
You will be responsible for the safe and efficient delivery of Mains Renewal activities, working as part of a team of six, focusing on water mains activity.
This role involves significant excavation work, ensuring safety and security, maintaining access for domestic and commercial customers, and undertaking large-scale installation, testing, and commissioning of new mains, assets, customer supply pipes, and boundary boxes.
This position requires a 42-hour workweek, Monday to Friday, starting at 7:00 AM and ending at 4:30 PM, with an early finish at 4:00 PM on Fridays.
Key Responsibilities:
* Identify and mitigate potential hazards, documenting findings in daily risk assessments.
* Locate and safely avoid underground hazards, including the safe removal and disposal of asbestos.
* Communicate with customers, providing updates throughout each DMA renewal and maintaining customer supply with appropriate equipment.
* Implement trenchless solutions where possible to reduce costs and infrastructure disruption.
* Standby availability is required.
WHAT YOU’LL BRING TO THE ROLE
The ideal candidate will have a strong focus on safety, including conducting risk assessments, safe excavation practices, and handling hazardous materials like asbestos. Compliance with regulations and maintaining safety standards are essential.
Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team are necessary. Candidates should be able to liaise with customers, provide updates, and collaborate with team members for smooth project execution. Adaptability, the ability to work under pressure, make prompt decisions, and handle various tasks flexibly are important. Problem-solving skills to mitigate risks and ensure project success are also valued.
While skills and experience are important, a positive attitude, caring nature, and character are equally valued. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds, celebrating diversity as it helps us serve our communities better. We seek individuals who are committed to making a difference and getting involved.
