Join to apply for the Children & Young People Bereavement Support Co-ordinator role at The Mary Stevens Hospice
The post holder will work as part of the Patient and Family Support Team of The Mary Stevens Hospice providing bereavement support to children and young people aged 4-18 years, primarily through one-to-one sessions using the medium of creative bereavement support and specialised grief activities.
In certain circumstances an element of adult support may be required.
Key areas of work
* To receive and process referrals for children and young people eligible for support from The Mary Stevens Hospice. Triage of referrals is normally conducted by telephone or face to face.
* Assess children and young people referred for potential support.
* To communicate the outcome of assessments to children and young people and, where appropriate, parents/carers.
* To prepare a plan for each child or young person (if accepted for support) as allocated by and discussed with the Bereavement Service Lead.
* To conduct one-to-one sessions with children and young people, normally up to 8 sessions per person, offering pre-bereavement and bereavement support through the medium of appropriately designed bereavement supportive listening and creative activities.
* To manage a caseload of children/young people per week to ensure availability to support children/young people as needed on our In-Patient Unit and Days Services Unit.
* To be responsible for keeping up to date records, including maintaining and updating computer records/database.
* To provide telephone support and advice when required.
* To lead and facilitate groups for children and young people as and when required.
* To deliver presentations and training as required to internal departments and external bodies and agencies to raise awareness of the work of The Mary Stevens Hospice.
* To be able to work with autonomy, under pressure, be self-motivating and function well as a team member.
* To be sensitive to the requirements of families and staff and share the values of Care, Compassion and Kindness and the aims of the hospice.
* To work in line with all policies, procedures, guidelines, and regulations of The Mary Stevens Hospice.
* To liaise with the Patient and Family Support Team to ensure an adequate supply of materials for conducting activities is maintained.
* To maintain an up-to-date knowledge of all child protection policies/bereavement theory and practice and implement these in the working practice of The Mary Stevens Hospice.
* To recognise the confidential nature of the charity’s work with children and young people and act accordingly.
* To nurture an ethos of mutual respect in the workplace in keeping with the charity's aims.
* To coordinate/support events and campaigns.
* To undertake other tasks requested by the Bereavement Service Lead.
Support, Supervision and Staff Development:
* To attend and participate fully in regular team meetings as required.
* To receive supervision on a regular basis (internal management supervision and internal group supervision once a month).
* To engage in the annual cycle of appraisal, setting and reviewing goals regularly.
* To undertake appropriate training in skills/ practice/ theory as agreed with the Bereavement Services Lead.
