Position Overview
This post is based at University Hospital in Coventry (UHCW) within the Department of Clinical Haematology. The post holder will work alongside two core medical trainees and one GP trainee/FY2 on the haematology ward.
Training Opportunities
The post holder will have access to general training appropriate to their level of training (weekly half‑day sessions), haematology‑specific teaching and some oncology teaching.
Training includes management of haematology inpatients, acute emergencies, complications of chemotherapy, management of non‑malignant haematology patients, and procedures such as bone marrow aspirates, trephines and tunnelled line removal.
On‑Call Duties
There are no on‑call duties within this post. Working hours are Monday–Friday 08:30–17:00. Opportunities for locum shifts may arise if rota gaps exist.
Clinical Duties
* Work on the haematology ward and provide cover to the haematology day unit.
* Daily ward rounds with attending Consultant Haematologist and specialist trainees, providing continuity of care for inpatients.
* Outliers / Day Unit: support the ST holding duty bleep; review acutely unwell patients on the day unit (supported by ST and consultant).
* Assist in procedures on the day unit (cannulation, venesection) and, after training, marrow biopsies, lumbar punctures, Hickman line removal.
* Under supervision of Consultants and STs: provide care and review of inpatients, keep patient lists updated, request blood and radiology tests, request and prescribe blood products, review and discuss acutely unwell patients, clerk elective admissions, prescribe usual medication and prophylactic medication, plan safe discharges with robust handover to day unit or base trust.
* Contribute to management of patients in the Day Unit with Associate Specialist and Speciality Doctor.
* Attend network Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) meetings in haematology and present patients; optional attendance at MDT meetings in Thrombosis, Haemophilia and Haemoglobinopathy.
Requirements
* Minimum of one‑year medical work (continuous or aggregate) since obtaining a primary medical qualification.
* Desirable to have at least 1–2 years general medical experience, ideally working towards MRCP (UK).
* Desirable, but not essential, experience within Haematology or Oncology.
