Research Fellow – Textile/E‑textile Knitting

General Description: The University of Southampton is seeking highly motivated and accomplished post‑doctoral researchers to join an innovative research programme focused on electronic textiles (e-textiles) within the SUSTAIN – Sustainable heterogenoUs e‑textileS for impercepTible humAn INterfaces project. This EPSRC‑funded initiative addresses key scientific and technological challenges in textile‑based sensing, wireless systems, electrochemical interfaces, and garment design with a strong emphasis on sustainable, user‑centric e‑textile solutions. This role will be specifically situated within Work Package 4 (WP4), focusing on the development of knitted textiles for advanced e‑textile and wearable technologies, under the supervision and direction of the WP4 lead, Dr. Marie O’Mahony. You will be integrated into the Winchester School of Art (WSA) and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams spanning WSA, the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences, and partners at the University of Glasgow. Successful candidates will participate in cutting‑edge research and contribute to a collaborative, cross‑disciplinary environment advancing sustainable e‑textile innovation.

Eligibility Criteria: Applicants should hold a PhD or equivalent qualification in a discipline relevant to this position. This includes areas such as textile science, materials innovation, wearable technologies, or related fields that support e‑textile and knitted textile research. Candidates with substantial industrial experience may also be considered, provided they meet the research expectations and demonstrate equivalent expertise.

Required Expertise/Skills:

* Proven expertise and strong background in knitting for e-textiles and wearable systems with understanding of commercialisation considered advantageous.
* Over three years’ experience working with Shima Seiki knitting equipment, including advanced programming skills, is essential.
* Deep knowledge of fibres, yarns, and textile structures relevant to e‑textile applications.
* Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively across multi‑disciplinary research teams.
* Excellent communication and organisational skills, including scientific writing, workshop support, and event coordination.
* A strong publication record in high‑quality international journals or notable industry contributions in related technological areas will be considered an asset.

Salary Details: £36,636 to £44,746 per annum (pro rata), reflective of experience and qualifications in post‑doctoral research.

Contract & Duration: This is a full‑time fixed‑term contract for an initial period of one year, with the possibility of extension up to three years contingent on project progression and performance.
