In 2025, Hafren Water joined The Environmental Protection Group (EPG), bringing together complementary expertise in hydrogeology, water resources, flood risk, geoenvironmental engineering and SuDS design.

JOB PURPOSE:

The Senior Hydrogeologist will play a key technical and project leadership role within the hydrogeology and flood risk team, based primarily from the Shrewsbury office with flexibility for remote working and site attendance. This is a senior technical role responsible for delivering complex hydrogeological, groundwater, water resources and flood risk projects. The Senior Hydrogeologist will manage projects from inception through to completion, ensuring work is delivered safely, on programme, within budget, and to a high technical standard.The role requires strong technical capability, commercial awareness, and the ability to mentor junior team members. The Senior Hydrogeologist will contribute to fee proposals, client relationship management, regulatory engagement, and the continuous improvement of business processes.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

* Lead and deliver hydrogeological, groundwater, water resources, and flood risk projects, ensuring outputs are technically robust, proportionate, and aligned with current guidance and best practice.
* Manage multiple projects concurrently, including programme management, resource allocation and budget control.
* Prepare and review technical reports, risk assessments, conceptual site models, quantitative assessments, groundwater flow analyses, and supporting documentation to a high professional standard.
* Undertake and supervise site-based investigations, monitoring programmes, pumping tests, and data collection exercises where required.
* Support the preparation of fee proposals, scopes of work and cost estimates, contributing to commercial performance and business development activities.
* Act as a key point of contact for clients and regulators, including the Environment Agency, Natural Resources Wales and SEPA, providing clear and confident technical advice.
* Mentor and support junior and mid-level staff, providing technical guidance, reviewing work, and contributing to professional development and CPD.
* Contribute to cross-disciplinary projects across EPG, supporting integration of hydrogeology and flood risk services within geoenvironmental, SuDS and sports projects.
* Maintain a strong working knowledge of relevant regulatory frameworks, planning policy and industry guidance, ensuring advice reflects current requirements.
* Support the implementation and continuous improvement of business systems and quality assurance procedures, including health, safety, environmental and quality management systems.
* Contribute to technical excellence and professional engagement through CPD, industry forums, and knowledge sharing within the team.

PERSON SPECIFICATION:

* Degree in Geology or a related discipline, with an MSc in Hydrogeology or equivalent postgraduate qualification or experience.
* Relevant professional experience in hydrogeology, groundwater, or water resources role.
* Demonstrable experience managing projects independently, including budget control and programme management.
* Strong working knowledge of relevant regulatory frameworks and industry guidance, with experience engaging with regulators and statutory consultees.
* Experience in preparing high-quality technical reports with minimal supervision.· Proven ability to manage multiple workstreams and meet deadlines within commercial constraints.
* Experience supervising or mentoring junior staff.
* Strong IT skills, including advanced use of Microsoft Word and Excel, and familiarity with relevant hydrogeological and GIS software.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present technical findings clearly to clients and stakeholders.
* Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel occasionally within the UK.

Desirable:

* Chartered status or working towards Chartered Geologist (CGeol) or Chartered Scientist (CSci).
* Experience in GIS software and data management tools.
* A proactive and analytical approach to problem solving, with a commitment to continuous improvement.
* Experience of groundwater modelling practices and familiarity with relevant modelling software.
* Experience working within a consultancy environment and contributing to business development activities, including fee proposals.
* A proactive and innovative approach to problem solving, with a willingness to challenge conventional approaches where appropriate.

Job Types: Full-time, Permanent

Pay: £35,000.00-£40,000.00 per year
