Overview
4-year Engineering (Design and Manufacture) Graduate Apprenticeship focused on Commissioning Engineering. You’ll study for a BEng (Hons) degree while contributing to UK defence programmes and building a career in commissioning engineering.
What you’ll do
* Specialise in either Power Engineering or Control and Instrumentation, supporting commissioning and performance testing across electrical and control systems.
* Contribute to real-world projects, troubleshoot faults, analyse data, and assist with test schedules.
* Learn to apply commissioning procedures safely and effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
Your education/training
Study for the BEng (Hons) Engineering (Design and Manufacture) through Glasgow Caledonian University. Blended learning typically 1–2 days per week during term time, over four years. You will follow a specialist stream in either Control and Instrumentation or Electrical Power Engineering Design, aligned with your role and goals. The course is co-designed with industry and accredited by the IET, IMechE and InstMC.
Future prospects
By the end of the apprenticeship, you can progress to a Commissioning Engineer role at Babcock with a starting salary of over £45,000. There are opportunities toward professional registration as Incorporated or Chartered Engineer and career progression to roles such as Senior Engineer.

* UCAS Tariff: 96 points
* Scottish Highers: BBCC or equivalent, including Maths and a science/technology subject
* Alternative qualifications considered: Foundation Apprenticeships (one Higher at B) or Modern Apprenticeship (SCQF Level 6) with related subjects; HNC in Electrical, Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering
* Security clearance requirements: BPSS and Security Check (SC) clearance; some programmes may have additional restrictions
