Overview

The Department is seeking to employ a Workshop Technician to work within a technical support team, delivering technical assistance and expertise to undergraduate and research projects within the department.

Responsibilities

The Department is seeking to employ a Workshop Technician to work within a technical support team, delivering technical assistance and expertise to undergraduate and research projects within the department. The main duties of the post will be to manufacture customised devices e.g. specialised mechanical or electro-mechanical apparatus and operate, maintain and set up the engineering workshop equipment within the laboratories without supervision. You will also provide technical advice and support to students and staff working within the laboratory area. You will produce machined parts from engineering drawings to a high level of accuracy, using all standard engineering workshop machinery (Manual and CNC lathes, milling machines etc.) The post-holder will also provide fitting and maintenance services in other laboratory areas. The successful applicant will also undertake engineering-based laboratories, train and mentor students in engineering applications lathes, mills etc. This role will require the post-holder to be confident in speaking to large groups while supervising junior staff and students. The post-holder will require a broad and deep understanding of a range of methods and procedures of engineering applications.

The post-holder will liaise with students, academic staff and other end users on the most effective means of test specimen production, test rig construction and general equipment maintenance. You will take responsibility for the safety and cleanliness of the work area.


Qualifications

The role requires a significant degree of problem solving, personal responsibility and initiative in dealing with machining problems and responding to unforeseen problems and circumstances with minimal guidance from the Line Manager. The successful applicant will have completed a recognised engineering apprenticeship using machine tools and an HNC in Mechanical Engineering and have significant, relevant work experience. They should also be competent in the operation of all standard workshop machinery to a high level of accuracy and be able to interpret engineering drawings. They will be a confident communicator and have a wide experience of many technical engineering disciplines e.g., machining, fitting skills, material properties and manual handling.
