Murphy is recruiting for an Engineering Manager to join our growing Infrastructure team, delivering a major water infrastructure project in partnership with Thames Water, as part of the AMP8 programme.
Murphy is a long-standing delivery partner to leading water clients across the UK and Ireland, including Thames Water, Severn Trent, Northern Ireland Water, Yorkshire Water, SES Water, Bristol Water, South East Water, and Uisce Éireann, where we operate over 25 facilities under full DBOM contracts.
A day in the life of a Murphy Engineering Manager
Responsibilities
* Design & Operational/Engineering Leadership: Lead the design and engineering delivery for water and wastewater treatment projects. Oversee all stages of design and delivery, including site surveys, option engineering, outline design, detailed design, construction, commissioning and handover on D&B projects.
* Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration: Collaborate with civil, process, electrical, ICA, and H&S teams to ensure seamless integration into the overall project. Provide technical guidance and coordinate with both internal and external design and delivery teams.
* Procurement and Equipment Selection: Understand the selection and procurement of mechanical & electrical equipment. Ensure project programme reflects procurement lead time and identify/mitigate programme risks.
* Subconsultant Management: Coordinate and manage subconsultants to align with project objectives, timelines, and quality standards; ensure contractual deliverables are met.
* Subcontractor Management: Coordinate and manage subcontractors to align with project scope, timelines, and quality standards; ensure contractual deliverables are met.
* Site Monitoring and Progress Reviews: Conduct regular site visits to monitor and troubleshoot technical issues; reflect design/procurement maturity risks in delivery strategy; ensure safety and client standards compliance.
* Client and Stakeholder Engagement: Build and maintain strong client relationships from project initiation through close-out; provide technical support and updates to meet objectives and deadlines.
* Health, Safety, and Environmental Compliance: Ensure consistent implementation of HSE procedures per Murphy and client standards; address performance, scope, cost, or schedule issues proactively.
* Project Reporting and Documentation: Prepare detailed project plans, reports, and status updates; highlight milestones, risks, and mitigation strategies; manage technical changes.
* Continuous Improvement: Participate in project reviews and contribute to process improvements across the company.
* Team Development: Foster a collaborative team environment; mentor junior engineers and support professional development.
* Temporary Works and Lifting: Identify key temporary works early and support relevant stakeholders.
* Supply Chain Monitoring: Monitor delivery against programme commitments and provide feedback.
* Engineering Team Development: Establish and grow engineering teams to enable efficient programme delivery, including planning of specialist resources and demobilisation.
Qualifications
* Degree in Mechanical or Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
* Chartered Engineer status (or working towards) preferred.
* At least 3 years of proven experience in an engineering management role in the water/wastewater industry.
* Strong commercial acumen with ability to manage design budgets, timelines, and resources.
* Ability to collaborate with multiple disciplines and provide technical and commercial guidance in a multidisciplinary environment.
* Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a track record of resolving technical issues and managing project changes.
* Knowledge of health, safety, and environmental standards in construction, particularly for water and wastewater sectors.
* Proficiency in Information Management systems; familiarity with AutoCAD, Revit.
* Strong communication and interpersonal skills to liaise with clients, subcontractors, and team members; ability to engage with clients and stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle.
