JOB BAND: C
CONTRACT TYPE: 2 x Full Time Fixed Term Contracts starting in January and ending August 2026
DEPARTMENT: BBC Sport
LOCATION: Salford. You will be expected to attend the office 2 or 3 days per week.

PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: £28,500 - £38,500 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.

We are happy to discuss flexible working. If you would like to, please indicate your preference in the application – though there is no obligation to do so now. Flexible working will be part of the discussion at offer stage.

Interviews for this role will be held in November.

Purpose of the role

BBC Sport is seeking two talented and versatile journalists to provide crucial editorial support for TV production teams and create compelling content across digital platforms. The successful candidate will provide high-quality research and written work across day-to-day output, primarily on football, as well as for major events and regular iconic programmes like Match of the Day.

Why join the team

Working as part of a small team, you will help shape and enrich the BBC’s coverage of sporting events and stories during an exciting 2026 which includes Wimbledon and the football World Cup. The role will include influencing the editorial direction, commentary and analysis during those events, working closely with high-profile presenters, commentators and studio guests.

Your key responsibilities and impact

* Under the direction of a Senior Journalist, generate high-quality and perceptive written content for digital platforms, including football data journalism.
* While working on live television programmes, whether in the Salford studios or occasionally as part of an outside broadcast, assist the content editor, presenter and studio guests to ensure accuracy and the highest editorial standards – checking and enhancing the script and graphics, writing copy for broadcast, answering queries and offering suggestions which provide added value for our audiences.
* Conduct detailed editorial research ahead of and during big sporting events, including writing in-depth major event guidebooks which are used across the BBC and are renowned in the industry worldwide.
* Work collaboratively within a team, building and maintaining effective relationships across BBC Sport.
* Plan and organise work efficiently, managing multiple tasks simultaneously while meeting tight deadlines and adapting to changing priorities.
* Maintain flexibility and resilience under pressure, particularly during major sporting events or breaking news situations.

Your skills and experience

Essential criteria:

* Recent and substantial experience in journalism with proven ability to work effectively in teams but also independently when required.
* Exemplary writing and subbing skills, with the ability to adapt content for different audiences and formats. It is vital to understand the necessity for accuracy.
* Sound editorial judgment aligned with BBC values and a passion for the stories generated by sport, including a keen interest in the sports news agenda.
* A detailed knowledge of most British mainstream sports.
* An eye for detail and the ability to add value to BBC Sport’s output through trusted and insightful contributions.

This is not an entry level role. We are looking for candidates with experience within the area, so please review the criteria for the role before applying.

Desirable criteria

* Experience of working in a live production environment.
* A good understanding and knowledge of our output on TV, social media, and digital platforms including the BBC Sport website and iPlayer.
