20-week fixed-term contract (from May 2026)
19 hours per week | £26,000 pro rata
EPIKS is passionate about giving people the opportunity to travel without using cars. We have developed an Active Travel Hub in Batley and Spen Valley, where people of all ages and abilities are supported to walk, wheel and cycle more for the sake of their wellbeing and lowering their impact on the environment.
We are seeking a flexible, proactive engagement officer to build on existing partnerships and coordinate engagement and activities at community venues across the area. Your role will be to create and coordinate events that give people the information, skills and confidence to build active travel into their daily lives. Working in partnership with local groups, employers and colleagues under the umbrella of Walk Wheel Ride Kirklees, you will be a practical, outgoing individual who has experience in running events, managing
budgets and resources and fostering behavioural change.
The post is 19 hours per week for 20 weeks but may require some overtime in busy periods. Based in community centers in Batley, the post is supported by a central office at the Huddersfield Media Centre where you would be expected to work from on some occasions. There is also the opportunity for some home working. The role requires some weekend and evening work patterns and will require activity delivery in areas such as Cleckheaton and Heckmondwike.
We actively welcome applications from people who are Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities, disabled people, people from low-income backgrounds, LGBTQ+ communities, and others who are under-represented in the environmental and transport sectors.
Responsibilities
The active travel engagement officer will be instrumental in the planning, publicising and monitoring of regular events that encourage people to walk, wheel and cycle more often. You will work closely with the EPIKS comms officer to gather and advertise information on local groups and events for the Walk Wheel Ride website and social media platforms. The hubs will offer information and advice on active travel: in person, online and via other agencies. A range of activities on offer at the hub and through community outreach will require the post holder to facilitate and help to deliver:
* Led walking groups, information on local routes and walking opportunities
* Events that are inclusive for people who are disabled or less mobile
* Support for more cycling including led rides, routes, skills and maintenance
* An ambassadorial role for Active Travel in EPIKS and the Walk Wheel Ride Kirklees brand
* Opportunities for partners and volunteers to contribute to activities and boost engagement
* Encouraging people to use and maintain local greenways
Activities will be responsive to local need and cultural opportunities, so liaising with partners, community groups and stakeholders will be a key part of the role. This means that the post holder will have room to be creative and flexible and shape the hubs' activities to suit the local community. The role will require supporting, scheduling and managing the safe delivery of activities through sessional staff, volunteers and cycle trainers. Regular liaison with admin and comms staff will ensure the wider team, public and funders are clear about the plans and outcomes of engagement.
What we're looking for:
We are interested in how you work with people, not just where you've worked before.
