Job Summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to recruit a Pharmacy Technician to work within our multi‑disciplinary team. The role is to support the management and development of the prescribing systems to ensure safe, effective and quality prescribing within the practice.

Our multidisciplinary team includes a Paramedic, Clinical Pharmacist, Practice Nurse, Physician Associate, Mental Health Practitioner, Physiotherapists, Social Prescriber and Healthcare Assistants alongside a highly skilled administrative team.

Job Description

* Dealing with medication queries including acute medication requests, patient medication and prescription queries (e.g., removing unwanted items, checking review dates, ensuring required blood tests and monitoring).
* Communicating with patients/carers, doctors, nurses, receptionists and other healthcare team members.
* Liaising with local community pharmacies, hospitals, care homes and secondary care regarding prescription queries and to optimise therapy.
* Answering medication drug queries from GPs and other professionals, supporting the lead GP with clinical administration, projects and audits (e.g., QOF, Manchester Standards, CCG Medicines Optimisation Team, MHRA updates).
* Working autonomously, prioritising work, maintaining accurate and timely records, and escalating when appropriate.
* Supporting the repeat prescribing re‑authorisation process by reviewing patient requests and medicines reaching review dates.
* Monitoring practice prescribing against local formularies, identifying high‑risk patients and participating in computer searches.
* Attending practice meetings and other relevant meetings as required.
* Participating in induction, education and training of new staff, maintaining and developing professional competence, and contributing to the appraisal process.
* Undertaking any other duties commensurate with the post holder’s grade as agreed with the line manager.
* Complying with organisational and statutory requirements (health and safety, equal treatment and diversity, confidentiality, clinical governance).


Person Specification


Knowledge

* Essential: Actively undertaking CPD for all relevant areas; up‑to‑date knowledge of pharmacy operational procedures; good dispensing practice; checking procedures; patient counselling; customer service; current NHS legislation; Pharmacy Law and Ethics; awareness of the national agenda for pharmacy; understanding of the context of pharmacy in the NHS; awareness and application of Health and Safety at Work Act and COSHH.
* Desirable: IT skills.


Skills and Aptitudes

* Essential: Well‑developed communication, negotiation, presentation and interpersonal skills; ability to organise and prioritise workload; ability to work independently and as part of a team; accuracy to deadlines; leadership and organisational skills; ability to maintain professional relationships; identify when advice is needed; computer literacy.
* Desirable: Coaching skills.


Qualifications

* Essential: BTEC Diploma Level 3 in Pharmaceutical Science or NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Pharmacy Service Skills (or equivalent recognised by GPHC); registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council.
* Desirable: Completion or working towards Medicines Management Certificate; A1 assessors award.


Experience

* Essential: Experience with individual patient dispensing systems; awareness of common acute and long‑term conditions seen in general practice.
* Desirable: Experience of working in a GP practice.
