As an Operational Support Grade, you will oversee the daily operations of a busy prison, working collaboratively within a close-knit team to provide a variety of support services. Your responsibilities will include patrol and gate duties, managing deliveries, supervising visitors, and monitoring phone calls and CCTV. The role involves working shifts and nights to ensure smooth operations.
You will work an average of 37 hours per week, which includes night shifts, evenings, weekends, and Bank/Public holidays. These days are added to your holiday allowance. The shift pattern varies by Establishment and can be discussed at interview. For example shift times, please visit our website.
The key responsibilities include:
* Gate/portal duties: Ensuring secure entry and exit of staff, visitors, and vehicles; conducting searches; issuing and collecting staff keys and radios.
* Control room: Operating the radio system and monitoring CCTV; reporting suspicious activities.
* Visits: Booking visits; processing visitors and escorting them if necessary.
* Censors/correspondence: Monitoring and logging mail; reporting illicit items; preserving evidence.
* Night duties: Securing cell doors and accounting for prisoners.
* Reception: Supporting reception tasks; photographing prisoners; managing property documentation and searches.
* Prisoner supervision: Supervising prisoners; assisting with clothing and property exchanges.
* Food delivery: Delivering and collecting food trolleys, possibly using electric tug vehicles.
* Driving duties: Transporting prisoners and escorts; collecting mail.
* Phone calls: Monitoring PIN system; logging calls; maintaining legal contact records.
* Procedures and protocols: Adhering to policies; responding to emergencies and incidents.
During the interview, you will be assessed against the Success Profile behaviors of Communicating and Influencing, and Managing a Quality Service. Fluency in English (or Welsh in Wales) is required.
Applicants must hold a full, valid UK driving licence with the D1 Vehicle Category, allowing you to drive vehicles with no more than 16 passenger seats, up to 8 meters in length, and towing a trailer up to 750kg.
