Podiatrist

Are you an innovative and driven Podiatrist looking to make a meaningful impact on community health and patient outcomes? We are seeking a dynamic clinician to join our forward‑thinking service as we undergo an exciting period of service transformation and integration.
In this role, you will deliver high‑quality, patient‑centred clinical care and play an active role in co‑designing new clinical pathways, digital transformation initiatives and population health strategies.
Experience and knowledge of a broad range of podiatric practice is required, along with a desire to learn and develop further. You will assess patients’ podiatric needs and deliver quality programmes of care in community clinics and domiciliary settings, and you will be an integral member of the podiatry team with opportunities to specialise in wound care, musculoskeletal, nail surgery or diabetes. All staff are supported and encouraged to take part in service transformation, various CPD activities and support for further self‑development.
Main duties of the job
* Manage clinical risk within own patient caseload, seeking guidance as appropriate.
* Obtain informed consent prior to treatment plans commencing.
* Undertake diagnostic procedures effectively using appropriate equipment (e.g. wound swabs, doppler ultrasound), and competently interpret, record, report and act on the results.
* Be proficient in comprehensive neurological and vascular assessments, wound debridement, advanced pathology and wound management (e.g. dressing selection).
* Responsible for carrying out a thorough medical assessment to ensure suitability of local anaesthesia and minor surgery.
* Undertake specialist surgical intervention for complex nail pathologies, e.g. nail avulsions and chemical destruction of the nail matrix with local anaesthesia.
* Manage a domiciliary caseload within a geographical area, working with admin teams to book appointments and using clinical time effectively.
* Maintain clear, comprehensive and accurate records, updating patient medical history, evaluating progression and working with the client to develop their treatment plan as required.
* Teach and assess students, newly qualified podiatrists and podiatry assistants.

Clinical duties
* Assess, diagnose, develop specialised treatment plans and provide effective podiatric treatments, using a problem‑solving approach based on clinical need and evidence‑based practice.
* Provide early intervention whenever possible to enable long term gain.
* Commit to the philosophy of care with an emphasis on patient empowerment and independence by providing education and information to help patients manage their own foot needs.
* Provide services at a wide variety of sites (home, clinics, GP practices, community hospitals and challenging conditions), often working in isolation, and act as a source of advice to patients, carers, GPs and other Health Care Professionals.

* Be proficient in comprehensive neurological and vascular assessments, wound debridement, advanced pathology and wound management (e.g. dressing selection).
* Responsible for carrying out a thorough medical assessment to ensure suitability of local anaesthesia and minor surgery.
* Undertake specialist surgical intervention for complex nail pathologies, e.g. nail avulsions and chemical destruction of the nail matrix with local anaesthesia.
* Undertake basic biomechanical assessments to prescribe, manufacture and dispense orthotics or simple insoles, referring to specialist service as required.
* Manage a domiciliary caseload within a geographical area, working with admin teams to book appointments and using clinical time effectively.
* Maintain clear, comprehensive and accurate records, updating patients’ medical history, evaluating progression and working with the client to develop their treatment plan as required.
* Actively participate in clinical support (clinical supervision) and utilise reflective practice as a method to ensure quality of care for all service users.
* Teach and assess students, newly qualified podiatrists and podiatry assistants.
Professional
* Work as an autonomous clinician within Professional, Departmental and SDHC guidelines, using clinical reasoning and decision‑making skills to determine the best approach to achieve positive clinical outcomes for patients.
* Be aware of own scope of practice and refer to peers or other professionals as necessary.
* Keep up to date with clinical and professional developments.
* Maintain and update individual Professional Portfolio, and achieve statutory hours of CPD per year.
* Participate in departmental clinical governance initiatives (e.g. audit data collection, contributing to and supporting the development of clinical standards).
* Attend all mandatory training in line with SDHC employment and professional need.
* Actively participate in personal development plans (PDPs), team objectives and life‑long learning.
Organisational
* Work towards achieving the objectives and values of SDHC.
* Be responsible for the operational management of an assigned clinical base, including controlled pharmacy supplies, ordering and managing stock while adhering to health and safety guidelines.
* Ensure equipment is properly maintained, reporting faults or irregularities to the appropriate person.
* Record clinical activities and outcomes and refer patients as required.
* Use IT systems appropriately.
* Report all clinical and non‑clinical accidents or near misses promptly and cooperate with any investigations undertaken.
* Ensure security of clinic rooms, equipment and supplies (especially controlled items) when working at any clinic site or domiciliary visit.
* Be responsible for the collection of voluntary contributions and ensure they are securely locked away.
Communication & Working Relationships
* Communicate effectively with patients, carers and relatives regarding foot care and self‑care advice, appointments and procedural systems, ensuring patients are fully aware of their foot risk status and providing empathy and support as required.
* Maintain regular effective communication with GPs, Allied Health Professionals, Tissue Viability Nurses, District Nurses, Practice Nurses, Multi‑Disciplinary Teams, Health Visitors, Carers, Social Services and peers to ensure co‑ordinated delivery of care.
* Provide health promotional activities (e.g. foot health education sessions) to patients and healthcare professionals, and tailor education during treatments.
* Liaise with administrative and clerical staff as required.
* Contribute to the development of patient care by actively participating in team and department meetings and supporting colleagues and peers, including reviewing case studies and sharing best practice.

Qualifications
* Podiatric Medicine Degree or equivalent diploma
* HCPC registration
* Local anaesthesia certificate
* Full driving licence
* Portfolio of experience
* IRMER certificate
* Member of the Royal College of Podiatry
