Job Summary
Powys Teaching Health Board is seeking an experienced and compassionate Senior Counsellor (band 6) to join the Local Primary Mental Health Service (LPMHSS) on a full‑time permanent basis. The role will deliver high quality evidence‑based counselling interventions to adults experiencing mild to moderate or stable severe mental health difficulties. It is integrated into a multi‑disciplinary team delivering brief psychological interventions (6‑10 sessions).
Responsibilities
* Carry a comprehensive clinical caseload, providing relational based, person‑centred intervention plans informed by professional counselling/psychotherapy knowledge.
* Deliver face‑to‑face clinics from one or more LPMHSS Hub locations, and virtual clinics via video consultation platforms.
* Attend team meetings and multi‑disciplinary clinical meetings about individual service users.
* Maintain an Outlook diary for all clinical activity, working with the team lead and administrative team to align with personal job plan.
* Manage, plan, and prioritise daily workload, including managing own clinical caseload in accordance with individual job plan and support from line manager and clinical supervisor.
* Attend triage/screening meetings and engage in regular specialist clinical supervision from a qualified and experienced clinical supervisor.
Qualifications
Essential
* Accredited Counsellor/Psychotherapist/Family & Systemic Psychotherapist with professional accreditation (BACP, UKCP or equivalent).
* Knowledge of formulation, intervention planning, and delivery of brief evidence‑based psychotherapeutic interventions.
* Knowledge and understanding of Local Primary Mental Health Support Services and Primary Care Mental Health.
* Training in risk assessment and risk management.
Desirable
* Training in providing clinical supervision.
* Evidence of further training in psychological interventions and/or therapeutic interventions.
* WARRN training.
* Knowledge and understanding of Mental Health Legislation in Wales.
* Additional training and qualifications in CBT, Family Therapy, Psychotherapy, trauma work, psychosocial interventions, dementia care, group therapies, solution‑focused brief therapy, or other evidence‑based brief psychological interventions.
Experience
Essential
* Post‑qualification/accreditation experience working in a mental health setting delivering brief interventions, including experience with marginalised groups.
* Demonstrable experience of working in mental health.
* Meeting agreed/specified service targets.
* Managing own caseload and time independently.
* High standards in all forms of communication.
* Experience leading change, service improvement initiatives, or other service development.
* Evidence of supporting daily living, community networking, health promotion, and understanding of the Recovery Model.
Desirable
* Supervising or teaching within a health care context.
* Organising and facilitating psycho‑education to groups of service users.
* Providing mental health support to people of all ages.
