The Council for Learning Outside the Classroom (CLOtC) is looking to recruit a freelancer to deliver a short term, part time role as ALPINE Project Officer.

Working in partnership with Canal and River Trust and funded by Sports England, the ALPINE project will be working with 10 After School Clubs (ASC) in Greater Manchester to support their staff and students to embed active play and learning in natural environments into their daily practice.

The project will offer ASCs four face to face ’Wild Experiences’ for staff and selected students (probably Key Stage 2) to build confidence in using their school grounds and going into the local area. Using peer teaching the whole club will then try out and develop their own ‘Daily Wild Tasks’ to generate a bank of ideas to share as part of an end of project resource pack. Each ASC will have their local area GIS mapped to be used to create active trails for all to use and receive a grant to assist the development and delivery of active play and learning within their school grounds.

Responsibilities

Development of the ALPINE Project

* Attend 2 day training/planning days with CLOtC and Canal and River Trust in August to finalise the project plan and learn about the ASCs they will be working with.
* Liaise with Awards and CPD Manager regularly to reflect and amend the project as required.
* Liaise with Canal and River Trust staff to determine any ongoing support they can offer the ASCs
* Contribute ideas to the catalogue of resources that might be offered to ASCs
* Develop the end of project resource pack with ideas from all ASCs

Delivery of the ALPINE Project

* Be the main contact for the ASCs from September 2025 – July 2026 ensuring they are supported throughout the project.
* Undertake 4 face to face visits to ASCs to teach staff and students alongside each other in the 4 different Wild Experiences.
* Work with each ASC to identify their needs, offer advice on developing and using their grounds and determine how they will spend their grant.
* Visit the ASCs as required to support their developments as they spend their grant.
* Map each ASCs local learning area.
* Link the ASC to their local outdoor education advisory service to ensure they are trained to use their local area safely
* Arrange water safety training with Canal and River Trust if required.
* Work with CLOtC staff to train ASCs to use ArcGIS to create further trials.
* Work with CLOtC staff to develop and deliver a workshop for the CLOtC National Conference 2025.

Administration of the project including communications

* Work closely with the Project and Event Officer to keep schools to timescales and monitor their progress
* Work with the Communications and Marketing Manager to utilise social media and the CLOtC website to promote the project
* Contribute to internal and external PR for the Council, including dealing with enquiries, communicating with stakeholders as required
* Work with CLOtC and Canal and River Trust staff to support the completion of questionnaires and pedometer readings
* Contribute to the completion of an end of project report
* Operational management
* Manage grant spending alongside CLOtC staff
* Support financial reporting and budget planning

General

* Perform any other duties consistent with the role and/or reasonably required by the Awards and CPD Manager.
* Act as an ambassador for learning outside the classroom.

Qualifications

We are looking for a dynamic, self-motivated individual(s) with the following skills and experience:

* Experience of planning and delivering workshops/events in schools
* Teaching qualification and/or more than 5 years’ experience of working in/with schools
* Understanding of the English schools’ education system
* Experience of supporting schools to embed all types of LOtC
* Knowledge of the Greater Manchester area and organisations within it
* Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
* Good administrative and organisational skills
* IT literate
* Self-motivated and proven experience of ability to work on own initiative
* Ability to compile and interpret data
* Sound judgement and sensitivity in working with stakeholders and interested groups
* Creativity and problem solving
* Ability to work from home as part of a team of remotely located colleagues
* Access to own car with business insurance
* Willingness to travel to each ASC and CLOtC National Conference

Desirable (training as required can be given) -

* Understanding and/or experience of working with After School Clubs
* Understanding of off-site approvals needed to use the local learning area
* Experience of supporting schools to use their school grounds for nature-based and/or active play activities
* Experience of school grounds development
* Experience of working for a charity/voluntary organisation
