The Transport & Infrastructure Service are seeking an experienced Principal Engineer to join our Highway Design and Infrastructure. The Principal Engineer will be part of the Highway Projects team who lead on the design and delivery of complex highway and transport infrastructure schemes across Sunderland.
This is a senior technical role with real influence over project development, supporting the delivery of high-profile schemes that benefit the city and help achieve the City Plan.
About the Role
As the Principal Engineer, you will provide technical leadership, design expertise and project management support across a varied portfolio of highway projects from inception through to delivery.
You will:
* Lead the development and delivery of complex highway design schemes
* Provide technical advice to colleagues, senior officers and elected members
* Ensure compliance with highway standards, Health & Safety legislation and CDM, acting as Principal Designer where appropriate
* Manage multiple projects simultaneously, overseeing programme, risk and resources
* Support and supervise engineers, technicians and external consultants
* Lead or support public consultation, including on potentially contentious proposals
* Work collaboratively with internal services, external partners and stakeholders
About You
We are looking for an experienced highway professional, confident working at a senior technical level and exercising sound professional judgement.
You must have:
* A degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent experience
* Significant experience in highway design and robust project management
* Good knowledge of Health & Safety and CDM regulations
* Strong communication skills with the ability to influence and negotiate effectively
* An organised, proactive approach with the ability to work independently when required
