Overview
An experienced physiotherapist is sought to join the Neurosciences Physiotherapy Rotation at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The rotation offers experience in acute, rehabilitation and community/outpatient settings at the John Radcliffe Hospital and the Oxford Centre for Enablement (OCE). The role supports CPD, research and audit, service development projects, supervision and teaching to junior staff, students and the wider MDT, and provides opportunities to refine clinical and leadership skills across various neurological rotations.
To work across services within the rotation to deliver high quality, safe and effective physiotherapy within a cohesive multi-professional team, collaborating with patients and carers to assess, goal plan and treat after hospital admission, maximise independence and quality of life. Supervision and teaching of recently qualified physiotherapists, support workers and physiotherapy students. Participation in quality improvement, clinical audit and research projects. Participation in extended hours, seven-day and weekend working as required by individual teams to maximise access and delivery of rehabilitation and physiotherapy care.
Responsibilities
 * Contribute to effective communication and engagement with all members of the multi-professional team and with patients and their carers/family members, including sensitive management of complex or contentious issues.
 * Overcome barriers to communication, including language differences and pathological impairment, and engage external agencies to enhance patient care continuity and outcomes.
 * Write complex reports documenting patients’ clinical status to support ongoing care and clinical management.
 * Perform comprehensive clinical assessments following hospital admission and formulate treatment and rehabilitation plans in partnership with patients and carers/family.
 * Interpret and analyse multiple sources of clinical information to form accurate physiotherapy diagnoses, drawing on senior guidance as needed.
 * Deliver comprehensive treatment, rehabilitation and discharge plans based on clinical skills, evidence-based practice and patient preferences.
 * Evaluate progress against goals and modify plans; determine mental capacity and obtain informed consent where appropriate; manage care within legal frameworks for patients lacking capacity.
 * Coordinate interventions across disciplines and maintain accurate records in electronic patient records; adhere to risk assessment and manual handling policies.
 * Demonstrate practical physiotherapy assessment and treatment skills including manual therapy and therapeutic handling; possess dexterity, coordination and palpation skills for assessment and treatment.
 * Represent physiotherapy at MDT meetings to ensure coordinated care; participate in extended hours and seven-day service provision.
Leadership and Management
 * Maintain and safely use rehabilitation equipment; support others in equipment use.
 * Assist in supervising, teaching and appraising junior staff and assistants; deputise for team lead as needed.
 * Plan and organise time, patient caseloads, meetings and training; adjust plans according to staffing and unpredictable factors.
 * Assist in planning junior staff, students and assistant timetables and deputise for senior staff in organisational duties.
Education and Professional Development
 * Organise and contribute to the team’s training and post-registration education programme.
 * Educate multidisciplinary groups, patients, families and carers as appropriate; supervise undergraduate student physiotherapists and support practice-based learning.
 * Engage in ongoing learning from others within and outside the profession; maintain ongoing professional development and a portfolio to evidence this; keep knowledge up to date for best practice in older adult care and rehabilitation.
Research and Development
 * Participate in quality improvement and clinical audit through approved projects.
 * Implement and maintain evidence-based physiotherapy practice via continuing professional development; apply national and local clinical standards.
Effort
 * Undertake moderate physical effort for several short periods per shift; maintain concentration amid interruptions and variable patterns; manage distressing or emotional situations professionally; tolerate challenging working conditions.
Qualifications and Desirable Criteria
 * A degree in Physiotherapy; valid driving licence with access to a vehicle.
 * Broad experience as a qualified physiotherapist including neurology and other core areas (musculoskeletal, respiratory, older adults); ability to assess and manage patients with varied neurological diagnoses; applied evidence-based neurological physiotherapy practice.
 * Understanding of effective multidisciplinary team working and ability to teach, supervise and appraise colleagues; evidence of supporting team development.
 * Desirable: postgraduate master’s qualification relevant to the role and evidence of application; membership of a specialist group (e.g., ACPIN); UK professional registration.
