National Highways, formerly Highways England, has named Amey Consulting as a Design partner to support the delivery of the largest renewals programme and Environment and Wellbeing Designated Funds ever launched. The £3.6bn Scheme Delivery Framework (SDF) enables National Highways to procure design and construction services across the Strategic Road Network.
The Role
We are expanding our capacity on the Midlands SDF contract for National Highways. The role can be based anywhere in the Midlands, with multiple offices and remote work options. This Senior Environmental Consultant role offers the opportunity to collaborate with design teams and clients to lead Environmental Assessments across all SDF projects in the Midlands. Responsibilities include providing input into and reviewing DMRB topics such as Biodiversity, Landscape, Cultural Heritage, Waste & Materials, Population and Human Health, Climate, and coordinating environmental projects from scoping reports to full assessments.
Weekly Responsibilities
* Line manage and mentor junior team members, providing environmental input to SDF schemes in the Midlands. Collaborate with the Senior Ecologist on resource allocation, project management, contractual processes, staff development, document review, and technical training.
* Contribute to budgets and forecast future work.
* Guide on best practices and methods, liaising with Amey designers.
* Stay updated with industry best practices.
* Work with ecologists to advise on environmental assessments, ecological studies, and hazards.
* Conduct site visits, inspections, and surveys to inform project design across disciplines.
* Prepare and review technical reports complying with legislation and standards.
* Engage with statutory bodies like the Environment Agency, Natural England, and Local Authorities.
Candidate Requirements
* Undergraduate degree in Environmental Science or similar, with 6+ years’ experience in environmental assessment reporting within a consultancy.
* Membership of a professional body or relevant qualifications leading to membership.
* Experience in a multidisciplinary environment, interacting with various environmental and design teams, clients, and stakeholders.
* Experience on infrastructure projects and contractual management is desirable.
* Ability to manage budgets, resourcing, and workload planning to ensure timely delivery.
