Mechanical Design Engineer
Location: Filton
Contract Length: 12 Months (Likely Extension)
Hours: 35 per week (4 days between 7am-7pm)
Clearance: BPSS+ (completed by the Client's Security Team)
Rate: £50ph Umbrella / £37.38ph PAYE
IR35: Inside (Off‑Payroll Working Rules Apply)
About the Role
Our Client is seeking an experienced Fluid Mechanical Design Engineer to join their Test Centre team and act as the technical lead on an exciting R&T project focused on exploring auto‑ignition temperatures for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).
You will join at the conceptual architecture definition stage and lead the project through detailed design, build, and commissioning - delivering a complete end‑to‑end test rig development project.
This role sits within a multi‑disciplinary engineering environment, working alongside Test Means Architecture & Integration teams to deliver a safe, high‑quality technical solution.
Key Responsibilities
1. Lead the team through detailed design activities and successfully pass the Critical Design Review (CDR).
2. Develop and implement the full build plan for a small‑scale test rig.
3. Lead Verification & Validation activities for the built test rig and ensure readiness for entry into service.
4. Coordinate technical work across the team, ensuring correct prioritisation.
5. Provide day‑to‑day engineering guidance and support to resolve technical challenges.
6. Engage in cross‑disciplinary collaboration across organisational and international teams.
Required Skills & Experience
7. Proven experience working in a test laboratory environment.
8. Experience operating within hazardous environments.
9. Strong understanding of systems testing techniques.
10. Background working with large, high‑pressure fluid mechanical systems.
11. Familiarity with: Hydro‑mechanical instrumentation installationsData logging & acquisition systems
12. Experience leading full end‑to‑end project delivery (highly desirable).
13. Experience designing and building small test rigs, particularly for flammable fuels or chemicals (highly desirable).
