We are looking for a passionate, knowledgeable, and experienced teacher to lead communication at Regency High School and support our students in developing meaningful and functional communication skills.
Regency High School is a specialist secondary provision for pupils with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) for cognition and learning needs, as well as other SEND. Many of our learners also experience a wide range of communication challenges related to autism, speech and language disorders, sensory processing differences, and complex neurodiversity.
We are seeking a fully qualified teacher with a strong understanding of specialist communication needs and experience supporting pupils who use alternative and augmentative communication (AAC). The successful candidate will work closely with, and manage, our dedicated communication team, including the Communication TA and specialist support staff, and collaborate with internal and external speech and language therapists.
Key Responsibilities:
* Oversee and manage the communication provision across the school.
* Lead interventions across the school, both 1:1 and in small groups.
* Develop, adapt, and create personalised communication resources, including adapting published materials and making individualised systems.
* Develop and maintain high-quality communication environments and individualised strategies.
* Lead training and mentoring for staff on inclusive communication approaches (e.g. Signalong, AAC systems).
* Work in close partnership with speech and language therapists to develop and review communication targets and support plans.
* Support teaching teams in embedding communication strategies into the curriculum and daily routines.
* Monitor and evaluate the impact of communication strategies on pupil progress and engagement.
* Contribute to EHCP reviews, multidisciplinary meetings, and parental engagement.
Essential Criteria:
* Experience working with pupils with SEND in a specialist or inclusive setting.
* Strong knowledge of a range of communication approaches including AAC, PECS, PODD, Signalong.
* A collaborative approach and confidence in delivering staff CPD.
* A deep understanding of how communication links to behaviour, emotional wellbeing, and access to learning.
* Ability to lead Signalong training for school and community.
* Flexibility and commitment to inclusive practice.
* Ability to undertake any other reasonable duties related to the role.
Desirable:
* Previous leadership or coordination experience.
* Training in SCERTS, TEACCH, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), or similar approaches.
* Experience working closely with speech and language therapy professionals and families.
