Associate Director – Traffic and Highway Engineering Projects

Work with Us. Change the World.
At AECOM, we’re delivering a better world. Whether improving your commute, keeping the lights on, providing access to clean water, or transforming skylines, our work helps people and communities thrive. We are the world's trusted infrastructure consulting firm, partnering with clients to solve the world’s most complex challenges and build legacies for future generations.

Job Description

Our Streets Team has an exciting opportunity for an Associate Director to join our central Manchester office. We’re looking for an experienced professional with a strong background in leading the delivery of a diverse range of traffic and highway engineering projects, as well as a proven track record in work‑winning activities. The successful candidate will share our ethos of creating impactful design solutions and delivering exceptional service. You’ll play a key role in driving the growth of our Manchester and Northern Streets business—strengthening existing client relationships and developing new ones.
Our Streets team delivers feasibility studies, concept and detailed design, community engagement, project delivery, and construction management services across a wide variety of multi‑disciplinary transportation and urban realm projects. We’re a highly respected team recognised as market leaders in the transportation sector—particularly in active travel, public transport, bus priority, and traffic engineering.
More importantly, we’re a supportive, approachable, and collaborative group, committed to working closely with colleagues, clients, and stakeholders to achieve the best outcomes.
This role is ideal for a self‑motivated individual eager to take the next step in their career. Alongside local project delivery, you’ll collaborate with other AECOM teams across the northern region, the UK & Ireland, and potentially on international projects, offering diverse opportunities for professional growth and development.

Key Responsibilities

* Client relationship building – develop sound client relationships, be alert to commercial opportunities, identify emerging opportunities and develop strategies to fully exploit them.
* Work winning – prepare detailed proposals, client briefs and fee proposals and contribute to or lead bids. Work with colleagues to deliver marketing and business development objectives in both the local region and nationally.
* Project leadership – following successful accreditation on the AECOM project management system, act as a Project Director and Project Manager including monitoring financial performance and key performance indicators. Comprehensive training on AECOM’s project management system will be provided.
* Technical leadership – ensure technical content and quality of output produced is in line with the project brief.
* Team management – be a pro‑active line manager, managing career progression of line reports, supporting and monitoring team skills and ensuring they are up to date with current best practice, techniques, and innovation.
* Team leadership – support the Streets North senior management team, including deputising for the Streets Manchester Team Leader as required. This also includes pro‑actively supporting recruitment activities to grow the team.
* Internal relationship building – establish strong working relationships with other internal teams across AECOM’s business lines.

Qualifications

* A successful track record in the management and delivery of a portfolio of traffic engineering projects, particularly sustainable infrastructure projects and roads/traffic engineering projects.
* A successful track record of delivery of bids and proposals and proven ability to manage and grow a team, with strong leadership skills and the ability to develop and maintain a highly motivated project delivery team.

We celebrate diversity, including neurodiversity, and believe it enriches our team. We welcome applications from all backgrounds and abilities. If you are an applicant with a disability that requires reasonable accommodation to complete the application process, please contact us at ReasonableAccommodations@aecom.com. At AECOM, we value everyone's unique contributions and perspectives. If you meet some of the requirements above or have transferable skills you believe would benefit us, we would be delighted to hear from you!

Benefits

At AECOM, you’ll enjoy a range of core and personalised benefits designed to support your future and well‑being—tailored to fit your lifestyle. Take advantage of career development opportunities, our flexible hybrid working model to maintain a healthy work‑life balance, access to technical practice networks, and continuous learning through AECOM University.
