An opportunity has arisen for a Healthcare Science Support Worker to join the multi‑disciplinary team at the Oxford Gait and Movement Analysis Service. This highly specialised service provides assessment of walking and movement patterns for those with orthopaedic and neurological conditions, and is based at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.


Job Summary

The post-holder will be trained by the Gait Lab team to support clinical scientists, technologists and physiotherapists. Responsibilities include preparing, collecting, and analysing gait and movement data, providing clinical and administrative support, and contributing to clinical governance and service development.


Core Clinical Responsibilities

* Carry out aspects of gait and upper limb analysis under the supervision of a healthcare scientist or physiotherapist.
* Prepare equipment prior to analysis (e.g., retro‑reflective markers, electromyography electrodes) and perform routine quality assurance checks.
* Assist with patient measurements such as joint range of motion and with data collection in the gait laboratory.
* Assist with video collection for upper limb movement assessments and compile video segments into standardised footage.
* Liaise with patients and carers to obtain specific information, provide assistance during visits, and communicate condition‑related information in a clear and sensitive manner.
* Attend and participate in weekly case review meetings and report any untoward changes in a patient’s health status immediately.
* Obtain informed consent prior to any intervention and work within a legal framework for patients lacking capacity.
* Maintain accurate and comprehensive patient records in line with legal requirements and Trust guidelines.
* Assist with manually transferring patients safely between bed and wheelchair as needed, and recognise signs of emotional or psychological difficulties.
* Input patient data and clinical measures into the patient database during clinical examination.
* Assist with equipment checks, calibration and set‑up as required.


Administrative Responsibilities

* Organise and upload patient records to the electronic patient record (EPR) and carry out clerical duties.
* Produce routine monthly activity reports of patients seen in the service.
* Answer the telephone professionally, take messages, and forward them to the appropriate person.
* Maintain clinical and administrative records as appropriate.
* Assist with audit and research activities, collecting, recording and reporting statistical information.
* Upload data onto computer systems as directed by the therapist and assist with document management.
* Help maintain the intranet and internet sites for the gait and movement analysis service.


Service Development and Delivery

* Work within relevant professional standards and Trust procedures, comment on proposals for change.
* Provide input into the development of protocols and advise on literature and guidelines regarding service delivery.
* Participate in departmental policy making and adhere to Trust policies and procedures.
* Support research projects or service reviews as appropriate.
* Ensure services are sensitive to the needs of diverse cultures and patient groups.


Planning & Organisational

* Contribute to the planning and organisation of in‑service training programmes.
* Be actively involved in the induction and training of healthcare science trainees, new team members, and students.
* Plan and prioritise own workload and delegated tasks on a daily basis, adapting to changing service needs.
* Participate in departmental activities such as team meetings, project meetings, audit and service development activity.
* Undertake housekeeping duties, including preparing patient and staff areas, cleaning equipment, and managing linen.
* Participate in supervision sessions and performance review systems.
* Perform routine stock‑check of consumables and linen, ensuring procurement within required timeframes and compliance with infection control measures.
* Follow infection control procedures after each patient appointment and on a weekly basis.
* Participate in bi‑annual audit processes conducted by the Clinical Movement Analysis Society.
