Primary School – Barnet, North London We are seeking a compassionate, professional, and highly motivated Special Educational Needs (SEN) Teaching Assistant to join our inclusive primary school in Barnet, North London. Role Overview The SEN Teaching Assistant will work closely with class teachers, the SENCo, and other support staff to provide targeted assistance to children with additional needs, including learning difficulties, autism spectrum disorders, speech and language challenges, social, emotional, or behavioural needs, and physical disabilities. You will work in one-to-one and small group settings, delivering interventions, supporting classroom participation, and helping children develop essential skills for learning and social interaction. Your role will also involve collaborating with parents, external agencies, and the wider school team to ensure that each child receives comprehensive and effective support. This position requires patience, empathy, flexibility, and the ability to respond to the individual needs of each child while maintaining a positive and inclusive learning environment. Key Responsibilities The SEN Teaching Assistant will be expected to: Support pupils with SEN in one-to-one and small group settings, implementing individualised learning programmes Assist with the preparation, adaptation, and delivery of teaching resources to meet individual needs Support children’s literacy, numeracy, communication, and social-emotional development Implement strategies to promote positive behaviour and emotional wellbeing Encourage independence, self-confidence, and engagement in learning Observe, record, and report on children’s progress to the class teacher and SENCo Support children with physical needs or personal care routines where required Collaborate with teachers, SENCo, parents, and external professionals to ensure consistent support Facilitate children’s access to classroom activities alongside their peers Contribute to maintaining a safe, stimulating, and inclusive learning environment Maintain accurate records of interventions, outcomes, and progress Participate in staff training, professional development, and team meetings The Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate will be compassionate, patient, and committed to supporting children with a range of additional needs. You should be able to build strong, positive relationships with pupils, colleagues, and families, and demonstrate resilience, flexibility, and professionalism. The successful candidate will ideally demonstrate: Experience working with children with SEN in an educational or childcare setting Knowledge of learning difficulties, autism spectrum disorders, and strategies to support social, emotional, and behavioural development Ability to adapt learning activities to meet the needs of individual pupils Strong teamwork, communication, and organisational skills Patience, empathy, and a calm approach in challenging situations A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children A relevant qualification in SEN, education, or childcare (Level 2 or 3) is desirable but not essential for candidates with significant practical experience and a willingness to engage in professional development.
