Main duties of the job

Working underthe direct supervision of the GP Partners and strictly in accordance withspecific practice guidelines and protocols, the healthcare assistant willassist the practice clinical team in the provision and delivery of prescribedprogrammes of patient care.

This post requires excellent communication skills whilst maintaining confidentiality with an abilityto work on own initiative. A self motivated individual who is able to work under pressure and a methodical approach to their work.

The post-holder will strive to maintain qualitywithin the practice, work effectively with individuals in other agencies to meetpatients needs.Effectively manage own time, workload and resources.

Working as part of our busy but friendly GP practice team consisting of 4 GP Partners, 4 salaried GP's, 1 Advanced Nurse Practitioner, 1 Pharmacist, Practice Manager and large administration team.

We strive to provide an excellent quality of care for our patients consisting of 12,000.00 patients within St Helens.

Job responsibilities

Job summary:

Working underthe direct supervision of the GP Partners and strictly in accordance withspecific practice guidelines and protocols, the healthcare assistant willassist the practice clinical team in the provision and delivery of prescribedprogrammes of patient care.

Duties and responsibilities:

* Processing and management of laboratorysamples requested by GPs/nurses
* Clearing and re-stocking consulting rooms
* Preparing and maintaining environments andequipment before, during and after patient care interventions, includingassisting GPs during the performance of minor operations
* Assisting in the assessment and surveillanceof patients health and well-being
* Undertaking specific clinical activities fornamed patients that have been delegated and taught specifically inrelation to that individual
* Helping to raise awareness of health andwell-being and how it can be promoted

Assisting with the collection and collation ofdata on needs related to health and well-being

* Urine testing and input information intopatient computer records
* Act as chaperone
* ECG Recording
* Phlebotomy (when fully trained)
* INR
* Sterilising, cleansing and maintenance ofsurgical equipment
* Ordering supplies of vaccines, consumables andforms including stock control and rotation
* Pregnancy testing and input information intopatient computer records
* Stock and maintain Doctors consulting rooms
* Keep patient information leaflets well stockedand up to date
* Keep patient information notice boards tidy andup to date
* Vaccine/cold chain storage, monitoring and record vaccine fridge temperatures daily
* Take blood pressures as requested by thePractice Nurse and Doctors
* When fully trained undertake flu vaccinationsas requested by the practice Nurse/ Doctors
* Assist in flu clinics
* Carry out new patient checks including checkingregistration forms and recording information such as height, weight, BP ,allergies, smoking and alcohol status and giving out practice leaflets andsmoking cessation leaflets
* Issue 24 Hour BP machine and instruct patientswith chronic diseases by participating in clinics and recording height,weight, smoking status, BP etc.
* Assist in management of patients with chronicdisease by participating in clinics and recording height, weight, smokingstatus, BP etc.
* See patients for fasting and random blood sugarmonitoring, recording results and liaising with GPs and nurses as peragreed protocol
* See patients for BP readings for contraceptionand HRT. Generate prescriptions for signature by GP
* Accompany Practice Nurse on home visits.
* Cover for other HCA in her absence
* Developed GP assistant role follow appropriatetraining and ensuring appropriate competencies have been achieved and withspecifics of the role agreed with the partners

PRACTICE STANDARDJOB DESCRIPTION

* In the course of seeking treatment, patientsentrust us with, or allow us to gather, sensitive information in relationto their health and other matters.They do so in confidence and have the right to expect that staffwill respect their privacy and act appropriately
* In the performance of the duties outlined inthis job description, the post-holder may have access to confidentialinformation relating to patients and their carers, practice staff andother healthcare workers. They mayalso have access to information relating to the practice as a businessorganisation. All such information from any source is to be regardedas strictly confidential
* Information relating to patients, carers,colleagues, other healthcare workers or the business of the practice mayonly be divulged to authorised persons in accordance with the practicepolicies and procedures relating to confidentiality and the protection ofpersonal and sensitive data

Health &Safety

Thepost-holder will implement and lead on a full range of promotion and managementtheir own and others health and safety and infection control as defined in thepractice Health & Safety policy, the practice Health & Safety manual,and the practice Infection Control policy and published procedures. This willinclude (but will not be limited to):

* Using personal security systems within theworkplace according to practice guidelines
* Awareness of national standards of infectioncontrol and cleanliness and regulatory / contractual / professionalrequirements, and good practice guidelines
* Responsible for the correct and safemanagement of the specimens process, including collection, labelling,handling, use of correct and clean containers, storage and transportarrangements
* Management and maintenance of PersonalProtective Equipment (PPE) for the practice, including provision,ordering, availability and ongoing correct usage by staff
* Responsible for hand hygiene across thepractice
* Ownership of infection control and clinicallybased patient care protocols, and implementation of those protocols acrossthe practice
* Active observation of current workingpractices across the practice in relation to infection control,cleanliness and related activities, ensuring that procedures are followedand weaknesses / training needs are identified, escalating issues asappropriate
* Identifying the risks involved in workactivities and undertaking such activities in a way that manages thoserisks across clinical and patient process
* Making effective use of training to updateknowledge and skills, and initiate and manage the training of othersacross the full range of infection control and patient processes
* Monitoring practice facilities and equipmentin relation to infection control, ensuring that provision of hand cleansingfacilities, wipes etc are sufficient to ensure a good clinical workingenvironment. Lack of facilities to be escalated as appropriate.
* Safe management of sharps proceduresincluding training, use, storage and disposal
* Using appropriate infection controlprocedures, maintaining work areas in a tidy, clean and sterile, and safeway, free from hazards. Initiation of remedial / corrective action whereneeded or escalation to responsible management
* Actively identifying, reporting, andcorrection of health and safety hazards and infection hazards immediatelywhen recognised
* Keeping own work areas and general / patientareas generally clean, sterile, identifying issues and hazards / risks inrelation to other work areas within the business, and assuming responsibilityin the maintenance of general standards of cleanliness across the businessin consultation (where appropriate) with other sector managers
* Undertaking periodic infection controltraining (minimum twice annually)
* Routine management of own team / team areas,and maintenance of work space standards
* Waste management including collection,handling, segregation, container management, storage and collection
* Spillage control procedures, management andtraining
* Decontamination control procedures, managementand training, and equipment maintenance
* Maintenance of sterile environments

Qualifications

* GCSE grade A to C in English and Maths
* Able to work on own initiative
* Self motivated

* Clean Driving Licence Holder
* Qualified to NVQ Level 2 in Health and Social Care
* Qualified in Phlebotomy
* Previous experience of working in primary care
