Mechanical Design Engineer
Hours: Monday–Thursday 07:30–16:30, Friday 07:30–12:30
Contract Initial 6 Months
Location: Northamptonshire
Rate: £40.00–£45.00 per day
We're looking for a proactive and skilled Mechanical Design Engineer to join our clients engineering team on a fixed-term basis, providing cover while a team member is away on extended leave.
This is a great opportunity to work within a manufacturer of conveying systems.
About the Role:
You'll be responsible for designing, modelling, and documenting bespoke products and systems used in material handling operations. Working to a right-first-time approach, you'll deliver accurate designs under tight lead times, ensuring all work meets internal guidelines and relevant safety standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Create 3D component and assembly models using Inventor
Produce accurate 2D manufacturing drawings for laser cutting, welding, and assembly
Generate layout drawings using AutoCAD LT
Prepare technical manuals and engineering documentation (e.g., spares lists, test reports)
Perform engineering calculations and Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
Ensure all designs comply with ISO and Health & Safety standards
Use Sage X3 to create Bills of Materials (BoMs) and product records
Support development of new solutions through research and testing
Liaise with Production, Purchasing, and other internal teams to ensure successful handover and delivery
Occasionally attend customer sites when required

What You'll Bring:
Strong proficiency with Inventor and AutoCAD
Experience managing multiple design projects simultaneously
A solid grasp of mechanical standards, technical documentation, and safety compliance
Excellent problem-solving and time-management skills
Prior experience with ERP systems (e.g., Sage X3) is a plus
