Role Overview
The Principal Structural Engineer will lead the structural engineering discipline on complex and high-profile construction projects for the MOD. They will be responsible for technical delivery, client engagement, team leadership, and contributing to strategic growth. Their expertise in secure environments and regulated sectors will be key to ensuring compliance, innovation, and resilience in design.
Key Responsibilities:
* Project Leadership:
* Lead structural engineering design and delivery across multidisciplinary projects, ensuring quality, safety, and compliance with UK standards and regulations.
* Technical Excellence:
* Provide expert guidance on structural systems, materials, and construction techniques, particularly in secure and sensitive environments.
* Client Engagement:
* Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, stakeholders, and government bodies. Understand client needs and translate them into effective engineering solutions.
* Team Management:
* Mentor and manage a team of engineers and technicians. Support professional development and foster a collaborative, high-performance culture.
* Design & Analysis:
* Oversee structural analysis and design using industry-standard software (e.g., Tekla, Robot, ETABS, Revit). Ensure designs are robust, efficient, and sustainable.
* Compliance & Security:
* Ensure all work complies with MOD, government, and industry-specific security protocols and standards, including JSP, DIO, and Building Regulations.
Business Development:
Support bid preparation, proposal writing, and client presentations. Identify opportunities for growth in defence, housing, and commercial sectors.
Required Qualifications & Experience:
* Chartered Engineer (CEng) status with ICE or IStructE.
* Minimum 10 years’ experience in structural engineering, with at least 5 years in a senior or principal role.
Proven experience in:
* Defence secure environments (MOD, DIO, JSP standards)
* Government infrastructure projects
* Social housing developments
* Commercial buildings (offices, retail, mixed-use)
* Strong knowledge of UK building codes, Eurocodes, and relevant legislation.
* Proficiency in structural design software and BIM workflows.
* Excellent communication, leadership, and stakeholder management skills.
* Security clearance (or eligibility) for defence-related projects is essential.
Desirable Skills:
* Experience with offsite construction and MMC (Modern Methods of Construction).
* Understanding of sustainability principles and Net Zero targets.
* Familiarity with CDM regulations and risk management in secure environments.
* Ability to work across multiple offices and manage remote teams.
