My client is looking for a Lead Optical Systems Engineer to be focused on Optical System Development, and taking full ownership of the optical development and design, both experimentally and at system level. This is an onsite position based in Edinburgh.
Responsibilities
* Design and build optical experiments from concept to execution
* Develop and integrate optomechanical and electronic systems
* Select lasers, optics, and materials
* Conduct experiments and ensure system stability
* Analyse data using Python and MATLAB
* Support external research projects and collaborations
* Mentor junior engineers
Requirements
* Experience as an experimental optical engineer
* Strong hands-on experience aligning optical systems (e.g. lasers, quantum or life science setups)
* Solid understanding of optical physics, including Gaussian optics, electromagnetic interactions, and basic spectroscopy
* Familiarity with instrumentation used in holography setups (e.g. SLMs, EOMs, diffractive optics, laser frequency stabilisation)
* Experience with design tools and methods (e.g. CAD, FMEA)
* Proficiency in Python or similar for analysis and automation
Desirable
* Cleanroom experience
* Semiconductor process experience
