To assist in the smooth running of the laboratory and the timely provision of a high-quality service, the training officer is responsible for overseeing and delegating the training of all trainees and placement students, and must be suitably qualified. The primary working relationships will be with the department leads and the Clinical Pathology staff. The role includes undertaking additional duties as specified.
Main Responsibilities
As a key member of our team, you will be entrusted with a variety of critical tasks essential to our organization's success. Your primary responsibilities will include:
1. Rotating through various sections of Clinical Pathology under the guidance of section leaders;
2. Entering patient demographics, test requests, results, and comments into the Clinical Pathology database, ensuring accuracy;
3. Performing investigations on patient samples, including manual and automated techniques on sophisticated analyzers;
4. Working independently during out-of-hours sessions, managing your work and results, and responding to clinicians' demands;
5. Handling, using, or disposing of biological materials and hazardous chemicals safely;
6. Carrying out preventative maintenance on laboratory instruments and equipment;
7. Performing first-line troubleshooting and initial repairs on equipment, following guidance from service engineers;
8. Preparing, storing, and validating reagents for investigations;
9. Managing blood samples from automated analyzers and archiving them using the computer system;
10. Monitoring the accuracy of investigations using calibration and quality control procedures, and undertaking preliminary fault finding;
11. Validating and entering referral laboratory results into the system;
12. Reporting any events that may cause service delivery failures;
13. Assisting in the preparation and handling of biological samples, observing health and safety policies;
14. Using the pathology computer system for sample management and results checking;
15. Maintaining logs and ensuring timely processing of samples;
16. Using laboratory equipment accurately and monitoring storage temperatures;
17. Prioritizing urgent samples and ensuring prompt processing;
18. Maintaining stock levels of consumables;
19. Participating in audits, research, method verification, and instrument evaluation;
20. Interpreting first-line results and taking appropriate actions, including communicating abnormal results to clinicians;
21. Authorizing results on assays and referrals;
22. Handling telephone enquiries and documenting results communications;
23. Participating in sample referral to specialist labs as needed;
24. Engaging in annual staff appraisals and fulfilling training needs;
25. Updating portfolios and ensuring qualifications meet IBMS standards.
Qualifications and Experience
* Biomedical Science degree or equivalent;
* HCPC registered BMS and member of the Institute of Biomedical Sciences at Member level;
* Previous laboratory experience;
* Good knowledge of Blood Sciences techniques;
* Understanding of Health & Safety regulations;
* Experience with laboratory IT systems (desirable);
* Experience with accreditation processes (desirable).
