Canal & River Trust are pleased to offer a series of practical heritage skills training courses on the Kennet & Avon canal during September 2025.
Course Details
This two-day course will be held on Tuesday 30th September and Wednesday 1st October at Garston Lock and Pillbox. It covers an introduction to the management and care of built heritage, including surveying techniques, conservation principles, demonstrations, and practical training using traditional materials and techniques.
Participants can attend both days for comprehensive learning or opt for a single day, though full coverage of the content may not be possible in one day. The venues are near WWII pillbox structures from 1940, which will be repaired during the courses, commemorating the 80th anniversary of VE Day.
Participation and Eligibility
Group sizes are limited to 8 people per day to ensure personalized guidance. Places are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. The training will be delivered by two experienced Heritage team members and a WWII archaeologist, highlighting the historical significance of the canal during WWII, when it was used as part of national defenses.

Additional Information
This training offers valuable skills and an opportunity to contribute to the Trust's work while enjoying scenic UK canals and rivers. An informal interview will be held to ensure a good fit with the role.
Volunteer Opportunities
Our Conservator volunteers support maintenance, heritage activities, and environmental improvements like graffiti removal, habitat enhancements, and access improvements. Volunteers may declare unspent convictions and will undergo risk assessments.
