Job overview

The post holder is responsible for the assessment of patients attending the outpatient clinic, planning, implementing, and evaluating programmes of care with minimal direct supervision. They will deliver high-quality, patient-centred care in a clinic environment, ensuring efficient patient flow and a positive patient experience.

At times, the post holder will take responsibility for coordinating the day-to-day running of the clinic, supporting and supervising junior staff, and contributing to the smooth and safe delivery of services. They will act as a key member of the multidisciplinary team, contributing to the ongoing development of clinical practice within the outpatient setting.

The role requires the ability to work independently and autonomously, demonstrating accountability for professional actions and clinical decisions. The post holder will always ensure the safety and well being of patients, promoting dignity, respect, and human rights through the delivery of person-centred care.

The post holder will be required to rotate to the Dermatology Clinic at Wimpole Street, supporting service delivery across sites and developing specialist skills in dermatology outpatient care.

Main duties of the job

Clinical Duties

§Responsible for carrying out clinical practice within designated clinical areas, ensuring that high quality, current evidence-based nursing assessment, care planning, implementation, interventions and evaluations for patients is provided from admission through to discharge.

§Will be responsible for the application of knowledge across the range of work procedures and practices, underpinned by theoretical knowledge and practical experience.

§To act as advocate for patients within the area, to ensure a patient orientated approach to the delivery of care and to meet standards within the NHS Plan and other relevant guidelines.

§To ensure that patients’ receive high quality clinical care and a good patient experience, having regard for their customs, religious beliefs and doctrines.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

1.Key Relationships

Charge Nurse, Head of Nursing, Outpatient Manager, Service Manager, Consultants, Nursing Staff, Allied Health Professionals, Administrative and Clerical Support Staff, Professional and Technical staff, External Agencies such as GP’s, Ambulance Service, Social Services and Community Nursing Staff.

Education/Qualifications

Essential criteria

1. RN1/ RN2/ RN12 or RN Child Registered Nurse on the NMC register. To hold the appropriate level for the area of speciality.
2. Evidence of continuing professional development

Desirable criteria

3. Teaching & assessing qualification
4. Relevant qualifications required or course to area

Previous Experience

Essential criteria

5. Experience of working on own and in a team
6. Experience of working in the relevant area (Plastics, Pain, Pre operative assessment, Dermatology)
7. Experiencing of coordinating a shift
8. Completion of preceptorship
9. Experience of administering intravenous drug therapy
10. Supervision of junior staff

Desirable criteria

11. Previous experience in outpatient setting, dermatology clinic

Skills/Knowledge/Ability

Essential criteria

12. Able to assess, plan, implement & evaluate programmes of care
13. Up to date knowledge of current clinical and professional issues.
14. Knowledge of Evidence Based Practice
15. Competent in basic life support
16. Ability to administer prescribed medication including transfusion of blood and blood products
17. Able to work as an effective team member
18. Able to supervise and teach junior staff
19. Able to prioritise & meet deadlines
20. Able to manage difficult situations
21. Uses own initiative and is able to take decisions
22. Self motivated
23. Able to maintain clear and legible documentation
24. An understanding of Audit and Research Based Nursing Practice
25. Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
26. Basic Computer Skills including ability to use Microsoft Word and Electronic Patient Records (EPR)
27. Knowledge of the NMC Code of Professional Conduct
28. Ability to demonstrate application of the NHS Plan to own sphere of practice
29. Knowledge of Clinical Governance & a commitment to clinical supervision
30. Knowledge of the individual’s responsibility towards health & safety

Desirable criteria

31. IT skills Awareness of the structure and organisation of the NHS
