An exciting opportunity has arisen within the prestigious pain management service of the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust. This trust includes the Royal Free Hospital, Barnet, Chase Farm and North Middlesex Hospitals and associated services and is a high performing Trust with some of the best clinical outcomes in the country.

We are growing our experienced and multi-professional Pain Management team and developing the services we offer for our patients. As such we are looking for a dynamic, enthusiastic and empathetic nurse with or without experience working in a pain management unit to come and join our committed and well- established team .

If you do not yet have this experience, we are a team of highly trained nurse specialists, ready to direct you and help you gain the knowledge, skills and experience to become a specialist in this field. You will be well supported by a multi-disciplinary team that consists of specialist nurses/practitioners, acute and chronic pain consultants, psychologists and physiotherapists.


Main duties of the job

It is expected that the post holder will, under supervision and following a supernumerary period:

Deliver specialist advice to the patients’ admitting team and other members of the multidisciplinary team caring for them in collaboration with the clinical nurse specialists in the pain service

Work autonomously as required to ensure delivery of efficient and effective specialist care in pain management

Act as a role model in pain management to promote high standards of patient care and uphold the values of the trust

Participate in the on-going delivery of pain management education for nurses and other health care professionals

Liaise with the anaesthetics, EPIC, recovery, intensive care and wards to optimise patients pain relief and planning of patients care

Assist in the development of the pain service to meet the needs of patients and their families

To work as part of a multi-disciplinary team in providing care and assistance to people suffering chronic pain who are seen on an outpatient basis

The post-holder will primarily work at the Royal Free Hospital, however there will be a requirement for cross-site cover to the Barnet Hospital and other associated services including Edgware Community Hospital (outpatient service only). Cross-site working will be on the basis of relief for annual and other leave (pre-arranged) or for ad hoc notifications and as part of learning and development of the services.

Education & professional Qualifications

* Registered Nurse on part 1 of the NMC Register
* Evidence of ongoing Professional Development
* Evidence of post-registration education / qualification relevant to Pain Management or working towards such qualification


Experience

* Substantial and recent experience in acute surgical or relevant medical patient care
* Recent experience in the care of patients receiving invasive pain devices (e.g PCA, epidural, nerve block infusions
* Recent experience in teaching / advising junior staff


Skills and aptitudes

* Robust understanding of inpatient pain management
* Excellent communication and decision-making skills
* An understanding of developing and evaluating clinical guidelines
* An understanding of audit and clinical governance to develop and evaluate services

* Able to demonstrate skills in nursing development and education
