The Role
With Hearst Magazines UK, 2.5 days per week -
* Keeping up to date with environmental regulations: Staying informed about the latest environmental regulations and ensuring the organisation follows relevant laws and regulations, such as ESOS (energy reporting), CMA (greenwashing ad content), EUDR (deforestation regulation).
* Conducting environmental assessments and action plans: Identifying and analysing the company’s direct and indirect environmental impacts (carbon footprint – scope 1, 2 and 3; energy use; waste; water; travel; and related factors; and impacts related to publishing information about climate change and environmental impact of services/products).
* Developing and implementing environmental policies and strategies: Setting targets, defining objectives, and establishing guidelines and procedures for direct and indirect impacts.
* Creating sustainability initiatives: Designing and implementing programs to reduce direct environmental impact; promoting recycling, renewable energy, and sustainable practices; supporting commercial, marketing, and editorial teams to promote an environmentally sustainable lifestyle.
Engaging with internal stakeholders:
* Engaging with Hearst UK ELT: Strengthening governance of environmental sustainability initiatives and embedding environmental sustainability within Hearst UK’s purpose, together with social sustainability.
* Engaging with Commercial: Consulting on and reviewing sustainability brief responses to clients to ensure CMA green claims codes are met and environmental performance is accurately presented.
* Collaborating with the Good Housekeeping Institute team: Supporting sustainability initiatives including LCA analysis and testing protocols in line with industry standards.
* Working with the events team: Using the BOSS tool to track, measure and improve event sustainability.
* Running Environmental Editorial Rep programme: Providing training, resources, and editing copy in line with CMA green claims code.
* Educating employees: Providing training and communications to promote a culture of environmental sustainability awareness in coordination with HR.
* Running internal sustainability communications: Leading internal and external communications around sustainability, including newsletters, future reports, website updates, and contributing to all-staff communications with PR/Communication.
Engaging with external stakeholders:
* Collaborating with suppliers, customers, and community groups to promote sustainable practices and achieve environmental goals.
Monitoring and reporting progress:
* Leading Planet Hearst UK.
* Tracking the effectiveness of sustainability initiatives within ISO14001:2015 EMS; managing EMS ISO14001 requirements (registers, audits, certification) and liaising with third-party environmental consultancy.
* Updating Hearst UK ESOS annual report and annual carbon assessment in coordination with HMI and our carbon consultancy, including SBTi target achievement.
With Hearst Magazines International, 2.5 days a week -
* Engaging with HMI business units: Following guidance from HMI and Hearst Corporate and contributing to relevant initiatives aligned with Hearst Magazines UK.
What We Are Looking For
* Excellent communicator with international awareness of market nuances (US, Europe, Asia)
* Technical skills and up-to-date knowledge of climate change evolution and science-based information
* Experience working with data and insights
* Stakeholder relationship management
* Strategic thinking
* Ability to expand personal network and engage audiences/clients
* PIEMA Practitioner Environmental Management and Assessment or equivalent
