Job Summary
We are a dynamic team based at York and Scarborough Teaching Hospital Foundation Trust and are keen to expand our consultant body on the York site with another enthusiastic colleague. This prospectus provides insight into the team at York and the benefits of living and working in the historic city.
The post is for an Upper Limb Surgeon with a specialist interest in Shoulder and Elbow. The current working model includes a 1 in 10 rota covering a trauma intake providing an in‑reach and referral service to other surgical wards and the emergency department. Dedicated daily trauma list capacity complements a 24/7 rota, supported by an experienced multi‑disciplinary orthopaedic team.
Job plans will be reviewed at least annually following an appraisal meeting. The plan includes consultant's working pattern, duties, responsibilities and objectives.
Main Duties of the Job
Seeking an experienced shoulder surgeon to join the current team of upper limb surgeons. The post holder will have a 10 PA job plan: 8 clinical sessions, 1 admin and 1 SPA session. Some sessions are fixed; overall flexibility is required. Weekly activity confirmed at least 6 weeks in advance.
On‑call & trauma commitment 1:10. On‑call rota split into two blocks: Monday‑Thursday and Friday‑Sunday. During on‑call the post holder manages all acute orthopaedic admissions and trauma lists. Elective activity during this time is cancelled. No leave during on‑call unless approved cover. Working days and responsibilities will be discussed on commencement.
Additional programmed activities may be offered up to a maximum of 2 for full‑time posts, allowing a total of 12.
About Us
The York Department currently consists of 14 orthopaedic surgeons providing on‑call, trauma and elective services at York Hospital. All surgeons and middle‑grade doctors perform some clinical work on a seconded basis at Clifton Park NHS Treatment Centre. Theatre activity occurs at York Teaching Hospital; outpatient clinics split between the York Hospital site & the Clifton Chapel site. The Trust has a 30‑bedded trauma ward, 25‑bedded elective ward, and busy outpatient department adjacent to A&E, plus a separate outpatient facility in nearby Clifton. Four dedicated orthopaedic operating theatres with laminar flow: one trauma, two elective, one day case at the Day Treatment Unit. Multi‑disciplinary team includes Extended Scope Physiotherapists and Advanced Nurse Practitioners.

Qualifications and Experience
* GMC Specialist Register in Trauma & Orthopaedics (CCT date within 6 months of interview or CESR).
* ATLS.
* Specialist interest in Shoulder and Elbow Surgery.
* Ability to demonstrate clinical experience and skill in trauma orthopaedics and shoulder‑elbow surgery.
* Knowledge of good medical practice and GMC requirements.
* Experience managing complex shoulder and elbow trauma and standard/complex shoulder arthroplasty.
* Fellowship experience in shoulder and elbow surgery (desirable).
* Experience supervising SpRs/specialist trainees (desirable).
* Experience teaching undergraduate and postgraduate trainees.
* Leadership and teamwork – work effectively with others towards shared goals.
Mentoring & Teaching
* Experience teaching undergraduate and postgraduate trainees.
* Ability to work effectively under pressure.
* Experience supervising SpRs/specialist trainees (desirable).
Leadership & Teamwork
* Work effectively with others towards shared goals, welcoming diverse perspectives.
