Job overview

We are currently looking for an experienced Health Care Assistant to join our busy 17 bedded surgical ward on C14B at RBH. We look after a variety of patients with surgical diagnoses, including pre and post op care. Our patients can be quite complex with a variety of needs, with a lot requiring considerable nursing care.

You must be able to work under pressure, both within a team and using your own initiative. You must be flexible, punctual and hard working. An understanding of the role and experience is preferable, but training will be provided. Working alongside a trained nurse to deliver safe, personal and effective care is the main responsibility but an enthusiasm to develop yourself within the role is desirable.


Main duties of the job

Main duties will include assisting patients to meet their hygiene needs both at the bedside and in the bathroom with showering etc, pressure area care and positional changes in patients who are unable to move themselves, giving out and collecting in meals to patients and assisting patients who need support to meet their nutritional requirements, working alongside a trained nurse to deliver a high standard of nursing care.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

As mentioned above in the main duties section, working alongside a registered nurse to deliver safe, personal and effective care is of paramount importance. Delivering adequate oral nutrition and hydration to our patients in order to aide their recovery is important. Through meal delivery service and brew rounds we can encourage our patients to take adequate food and drink which is extremely important in a patients recovery process. Maintaining good hygiene from both a personal hygiene and oral hygiene point of view, as well as ensuring that skin checks and care are carried out to try and minimise skin damage through either moisture or pressure damage. Mobilisation of patients to help aide a speedy recovery and assisting with the enhanced recovery process for patients. There will also be a need to deliver compassionate care to patients who are at the end of their life and this is extremely important to deliver well as we only get one chance to do this in a caring and compassionate manner, involving the patient, their family and friends. Essential


Essential criteria

* Basic numeracy and literacy skills
* Willing to undertake further training
* Previous experience in a caring role, or Step Into ELHT (via bank initially)
* Level 2 Health and Social Care qualification
* Basic computer skills
* Ability to understand and comply with procedures
* Clear communicator with effective listening skills
* Friendly and caring manner
* Supportive team player


Desirable criteria

* Performing HCA Band 2 role to good level with testimony from Ward/Team manager
* Successful completion of the Care Certificate Successful completion of Higher HCA role
* Demonstrable personal drive and commitment to develop skills and seeks progression within the Trust
