About the role

ORB Innovations is seeking a Sleep Research Assistant to support an overnight Polysomnography (PSG) research program involving oral appliances and investigating sleep bruxism and sleep apnea. This is an entry-level opportunity with extensive training provided, ideal for someone interested in sleep science, clinical research, or medical technology and comfortable working overnight in a sleep laboratory environment.


Key responsibilities

During overnight sleep studies, the Sleep Research Assistant will:


Confirm participant documentation

* Check participant information sheets and consent forms with research volunteers.
* Participant guidance and safety briefings
* Explain procedures clearly and instruct volunteers on safety expectations.
* Provide guidance on what to do if assistance is needed during the night.


PSG monitoring and support

* Monitor research volunteers and PSG equipment throughout the study.
* Identify and respond to signal quality issues or equipment faults.


Sensor and equipment set-up

* Assist with the set-up, adjustment, and replacement of PSG sensors and related equipment with participants.


Data handling and documentation

* Record, label, and save PSG study data according to GDPR requirements and research protocols / SOPs.
* Maintain accurate study notes and logs as required.


Communication and escalation

* Communicate promptly with the wider research team regarding safety concerns, protocol deviations, or data-quality issues that arise during night testing.


Emergency response

Follow emergency procedures alongside other night-time support staff if a volunteer becomes unwell or requires medical assistance.


Qualifications and experience (essential / desirable)

This is an entry-level role. Training will be provided; however, the ideal candidate will have:


Essential

* Current Emergency First Aid qualification
* Ability to work reliably overnight (20:00 to 08:00) and follow structured protocols
* Strong attention to detail and comfort working with sensitive participant data


Desirable

* BSc (or equivalent) in a Biological or STEM subject
* Interest in sleep science, sleep medicine, or clinical research
* Any prior exposure to PSG, biomedical devices, clinical trials, or research lab environments (not required)


Personal attributes

* Calm and professional manner with volunteers, including during unexpected situations
* Clear communicator, comfortable escalating issues quickly when needed
* Responsible, punctual, and able to work independently during overnight shifts
* Comfortable following SOPs and working in a regulated / privacy-sensitive environment


Training and support

Extensive training will be provided, including:

* Study procedures and participant-facing scripts
* PSG equipment and sensor handling
* Data handling, documentation standards, and GDPR-compliant workflows
* Safety procedures and escalation pathways for overnight studies
