Legal Aid Practice Manager — Position Overview
You will be responsible for ensuring the smooth and compliant running of the firm’s Legal Aid operations, leading on LAA contract compliance, quality assurance, billing accuracy and performance oversight across controlled work matters.
Key Responsibilities of the Legal Aid Practice Manager
• Ensure full adherence to LAA regulations including eligibility checks, evidence standards and CW1 compliance
• Oversee performance monitoring, productivity reporting and financial accuracy
• Supervise and support staff completing controlled work case submissions
• Provide guidance on merits testing and exceptional case funding queries
• Maintain SQM quality standards, ensuring audit-readiness at all times
• Lead improvements in workflow, operational processes and compliance systems
• Manage LAA billing, claims submissions and engagement with the LAA
• Produce regular compliance, risk and performance reports for senior management
• Lead training to ensure staff remain fully up-to-date with LAA changes
• Promote strong file management practices and data protection compliance
Requirements of the Legal Aid Practice Manager
• Legal Aid experience is essential — strong practical knowledge of LAA contract compliance and casework processes
• Supervisory or management experience within a Legal Aid environment
• Knowledge of SQM requirements and audit preparation
• Excellent organisational, reporting and data management skills
• Ability to deliver training and support staff development
• Strong communication skills and confidence working with stakeholders at all levels
• IT proficiency and experience with case management systems
