What to Expect in the Role
The Homelessness Prevention Coordinator works within the Housing Services team to prevent homelessness by helping individuals retain their current accommodation or, where that’s not possible, secure suitable alternative housing. The role fulfills the Council’s statutory duties under the Housing Act 1996 and the Homelessness Reduction Act 2017.
Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities
* Assess Housing Needs: Act as the first point of contact, carrying out accurate assessments of customers’ housing situations and eligibility for homelessness prevention or relief duties.
* Develop Personal Housing Plans: Create and agree tailored plans with customers, using coaching techniques to encourage positive engagement and prevent homelessness wherever possible.
* Prevent Homelessness: Take proactive steps such as liaising with landlords, families, and other parties, applying mediation and problem‑solving strategies to resolve housing issues.
* Case Management & Record Keeping: Manage a caseload effectively, monitor progress against plans, and maintain accurate records using the Council’s IT systems.
* Partnership Working: Build and maintain strong relationships with statutory bodies, voluntary organisations, support providers, and private landlords to identify housing solutions and support services.
* Safeguarding & Compliance: Ensure safeguarding referrals are made where necessary and comply with data protection, confidentiality, and health and safety requirements.
What You’ll Need
* Excellent communication and listening skills to engage effectively with customers and partners.
* Strong problem‑solving and negotiation abilities, including mediation and overcoming barriers to housing solutions.
* Ability to coach, motivate, and encourage positive engagement to help customers take steps toward preventing homelessness.
* Resilience and adaptability, with the capacity to work under pressure, manage a caseload, and meet deadlines.
* Collaborative approach, able to build and maintain partnerships with landlords, agencies, and support services.
* Good IT proficiency for accurate record‑keeping and case management using systems like Word, Excel, and Outlook.
For Internal Staff
This post is offered as a secondment opportunity, allowing employees to return to their original post at the end of the secondment period. All parties must agree to the secondment, so please ensure that your Line Manager is supportive before applying. Full agreement from all parties must be confirmed in writing for the secondment to proceed; therefore candidates must have written agreement from their Manager before making an application. This written agreement must be submitted with the application form.

Assessment Centre will be held in person week beginning 23rd February 2026.
If you are successful following the Assessment Centre you will be invited to an interview which will be held via Teams on 26th February 2026.
