Our History
We are proud of our rich history, which makes us unique. The estate dates back to the 16th century, originally sold by Henry Owen to the Evelyn family. John Evelyn, passionate about botany and arboriculture, was inspired by Italian Renaissance gardens during his travels. He constructed an Italian garden and temple upon his return, designed by his cousin, Captain George Evelyn, later adding a parterre garden with an Italian fountain.
The estate has been passed through the Evelyn family, who have preserved John’s legacy while adding their own eccentricities. Notably, kangaroos have been spotted on the lawn in the past.
During WWII, it housed the Canadian Army, and in 1947, it became a fire training centre for the Home Office. Subsequently, it served as the national Fire Service College.
Today, our house is a welcoming place where you can create unforgettable memories that will stay with you long after you leave.
