Consultant in Acute Medicine

Closing date: 14 May 2026.

To ensure the continued delivery of high-quality care to patients within the trust and to contribute to the further development of the Acute Medicine service. Provide support and leadership to the Acute Medicine department nursing and medical staff.

The Acute Physicians are responsible for the areas listed below; they will supervise junior staff, provide post-take for patients on the Acute Medical Unit (AMU), conduct senior review for patients in Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) and Terrington Short Stay (TSS), and perform daily in-reach into the Emergency Department (ED).

Requests for relocation costs will be considered as per the Trust policy.

Job responsibilities


Clinical

* Provide rapid assessment of acute medical patients.
* Stabilise and manage patients admitted with medical emergencies.
* Carry out post-take ward rounds during the week.
* Maintain effective communication and handover to the on-call team.
* Develop emergency services, liaise with Accident & Emergency, Psychiatry, Rehabilitation and Community Care, and develop specialty teams and fast‑track services.
* Work in the Same Day Emergency Care unit and the Emergency Department to avoid admissions and support patient flow with timely, safe daily patient discharge across the Acute floor.


Organisational

* Teaching and training of junior staff, medical students and other healthcare professionals.
* Act as clinical/educational supervisor to locally employed doctors and doctors in training programmes of various grades and experience.
* Actively participate in departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit.
* Provide leadership and support for the effective development of the service.
* Ensure active participation in Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
* Develop clinical protocols, guidelines, and concise care bundles.
* Carry out duties with due regard to the Trust’s Equal Opportunities Policy.
* Maintain a safe and healthy environment for patients, visitors and staff; attend all relevant health and safety training.
* Carry out annual performance reviews with each member of staff.
* Agree annual personal development plans with staff and support their training or development requirements.
* Attend all relevant management training in health and safety, risk assessment etc.
* Participate in personal objective setting and review, including the creation of a personal development plan and the Trust’s appraisal process.


Additional Duties

Qualification

* MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
* MRCP Part 1 and Part 2 or equivalent experience.
* MD or PhD.


Experience

* Full Registration and a licence to practise with the General Medical Council.
* Entry on GMC Specialist Register; eligible for entry on Register or within six months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) at time of interview.
* Evidence of specific and broad training in Acute medicine and/or General medicine.
* Competence and expertise in Acute and General medicine.


Skills and Knowledge

* Clinically evaluate and manage a patient, formulate a prioritised differential diagnosis, initiate an appropriate management plan, and review and adjust this depending on treatment outcomes.
* Manage the difficulties of dealing with complexity and uncertainty in the care of patients; employ expertise and clinical decision‑making skills of a senior autonomous practitioner.
* Demonstrate key generic clinical skills around consent; ensure humane interventions, prescribe medicines safely and use medical devices safely.
