Job Summary
The Calderdale, Kirklees, and Wakefield Bowel Cancer Screening Programme invites nurses to support men and women aged 50‑74 who complete an at‑home Faecal Immunochemical Test (FIT) and, if positive, attend for a screening colonoscopy. The role involves working across Calderdale and Huddersfield Foundation Trust and Mid Yorkshire Hospitals Trust to provide a specialist, nurse‑led service for participants in the national Bowel Cancer Screening Programme.
Responsibilities
* Model standards of care and behaviour through clinical practice.
* Contribute to the development of MDT and team objectives for the service and specialty.
* Participate in local clinical networks and specialty‑specific groups in partnership with other key professionals.
* Engage in shared learning and help develop new ideas and ways of working.
* Act as the referred participant’s point of contact, providing advice before decision to participate.
* Through nurse‑led clinics, assess participants’ suitability, acceptability and fitness for screening, and request alternative examinations when appropriate.
* Coordinate, monitor and review participants’ pathway, liaising with screening team members as required.
* Use specialist knowledge and advanced communication skills to break bad news and provide psychological support on diagnosis, treatment and symptom management.
* Act as Key Worker for individuals with cancer or malignant polyps confirmed at screening.
* Advocate for participants and promote their views and wishes.
* Collaborate with public health and promotion teams to maximise participation in the BCSP.
* Deliver follow‑up surveillance nurse‑led face‑to‑face and telephone clinics for all participants.
* Ensure all mandatory datasets are completed in a timely manner in real time.
* Maintain 28‑day and 62‑day targets for participants wherever possible.
* Provide the highest standard of care for participants in the National Bowel Cancer Screening Programme.
* Participate in health promotion events, screening quality assurance service visits, and audit work with Lead SSPs, the Programme Manager and Clinical Director.
* Promote sharing of skills, knowledge and experience within the screening centre and the wider community.
* Maintain safe use of SSP equipment and office equipment, reporting any faulty or damaged equipment.
* Coordinate patient movement through the screening pathway to achieve target times.
* Perform any other duties required to ensure continuity of service.
Qualifications & Requirements
* Experienced, forward‑thinking registered nurse with a keen interest in bowel cancer screening and a high level of clinical achievement.
* Positive, “can do” attitude and willingness to expand expertise in bowel cancer screening.
* Valid driving licence to travel between community clinics, endoscopy units and the local designated central office.
* Ability to work any 7 days, including evenings and weekends, and across multiple sites.
* Experience as an SSP or willingness to undertake the mandatory SSP Liverpool JMU course within 12 months of appointment, and to attend BCSS training—all required to remain working as an SSP.
* Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the capacity to provide psychological support when breaking bad news.
