Registered Nurse - Learning Disabilities

Water Meadow View is a brand new mental health inpatient unit for adults who have learning disabilities, which is due to open in late Autumn 2025 on our site in Whittingham, Preston. As we prepare to open this unit, we have an exciting opportunity for Staff Nurses to join us and support the Multi-Disciplinary Team to deliver outstanding person centred care.
One of the Trust's aims is to deliver the best possible care to our patients, and this new inpatient unit will do just that. Water Meadow View will offer clinical excellence, support, and safety, with patient-centred care at its heart.
The post holder will work in collaboration with the clinical leads and the ward manager, and other team members within the multidisciplinary team. The post holder will work a flexible shift pattern including weekend working, providing day to day direct care.
The post holder will ensure the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based, compassionate, person-centred care and ensure that care delivered is in a safe and clean environment.
The post holder will contribute to and participate in the on-going support of patients and their carers.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will deliver on key responsibilities within the inpatient service:
* To deliver prescribed care to a defined group of patients within an agreed framework.
* To plan and implement a structured approach to nursing care which takes account of service user choice.
* To accurately observe service users in order to assess needs and evaluate progress.
* To promote an environment for effective practice, complying with all health and safety requirements.
* To manage and supervise junior health care staff within the team.
* To ensure that the needs of people with learning disabilities including their physical and mental health care needs as well as spiritual needs (holistic), are effectively assessed and managed through the care planning process involving other specialists as appropriate.
* To maintain knowledge and follow all relevant trust policies and procedures.
* To participate in the appraisal process, identifying personal training needs relevant to the specialist area.
* To exercise professional accountability and responsibility using skills, knowledge and expertise in changing environments, across clinical boundaries and in unfamiliar situations as outlined within the NMC Code of Professional Conduct.
* To actively engage and seek clinical and managerial supervision to support your practice.
* Work within a Positive Behavioural Framework

*The £3k Welcome Bonus package applies to this role.
The Welcome Bonus is only available to candidates who are not currently employed (or who have not been employed in the last 12 months) by any NHS provider Trust in the Lancashire & South Cumbria (LSC) Integrated Care System (ICS) in a like-for-like role or core profession. For example, a Band 5 Occupational Therapist / Social Worker / Mental Health Nurse at another Trust in the LSC ICS would not be eligible for the bonus if moving to a Band 5 Occupational Therapist / Social Worker / Mental Health Nurse role at LSCft or in a role such as Mental Health Practitioner Role that requires the same profession.

Bank only workers for Lancashire and South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trust are eligible for the scheme if they have not held a substantive role in Lancashire & South Cumbria Integrated Care System in the last 12 months (subject to all other terms and conditions being met). These incentives are subject to recovery clauses. This bonus is applicable from 1st July 2024 - 31st December 2025.
Job responsibilities
The £3k Welcome Bonus package is designed to attract and retain the very best staff in post. The amount a new starter would receive is shown in the Welcome Bonus Payment Schedule below:
* £500 after 2 months of employment (counted from start date with LSCft)
* £500 after 6 months of employment
PLEASE NOTE: Individuals obtaining assistance through the Welcome Bonus scheme are required to sign an agreement which includes the following:
* return all of monies paid, if they do not start on the agreed date detailed within their unconditional offer
* to return all monies paid if they voluntarily leave the employment of the Trust within 6 months of commencement
* to return all monies paid if they move within the Trust from one role to another role which does not attract the welcome bonus within 6 months of commencement

Person Specification
Qualifications
* Registered Mental Health Nurse Qualification.(RNMH & RNLD)
* On-going registration with the NMC
Knowledge
* Good knowledge of legislation, acts and developments relevant to people with learning disabilities and mental illness within inpatient settings (MHA, MCA, Human rights act, Care Act)
* Knowledge of learning disabilities, behaviours that can present as a challenge, mental and physical health conditions, evidence based therapeutic interventions and treatments relevant to the needs of this client group
Experience
* Experience of working with people with Learning Disabilities
* Able to work as part of a multidisciplinary team
* Experience of assessing, planning and implementing and reviewing care needs
