Christian Chaplain Location: HMP Northumberland Hours:Part time, 15 hours per week Job Purpose To provide pastoral, spiritual, and religious support to prisoners and staff within HMP Northumberland, irrespective of faith background. The post holder will maintain and develop relationships with faith communities and visiting ministers, facilitating religious practice and supporting rehabilitation, resettlement, and reintegration into society. The role also provides counselling, guidance, and pastoral care to both prisoners and staff where appropriate. Key Responsibilities Pastoral and Religious Support Serve the pastoral and spiritual needs of prisoners and staff by supporting religious faith and practice within the prison. Facilitate and support religious worship, prayer, education, and faith-based activities representative of the prison population. Provide pastoral care and guidance to prisoners of all faiths and beliefs. Assist prisoners in maintaining and strengthening links with their faith communities and families. Rehabilitation and Resettlement Encourage faith communities outside the prison to actively support prisoner rehabilitation and reintegration. Help prisoners prepare for release by facilitating access to faith-based support networks and community resources. Contribute to initiatives that reduce reoffending and promote positive life changes. Chaplaincy Operations Undertake generic chaplaincy duties, including: Supporting new receptions. Managing chaplaincy applications and requests. Visiting prisoners in separation and care units. Providing support following incidents and critical events. Participate in Equality and Inclusion Management Team meetings. Work collaboratively with chaplains, faith representatives, clergy, and volunteers from diverse faith backgrounds. Community Engagement Represent the prison and organisation within the local community. Build and maintain positive relationships with local faith groups, religious leaders, and community organisations. Promote peace, cooperation, mutual respect, and understanding between different faith communities. Compliance and Professional Standards Maintain strict confidentiality and professional discretion at all times. Comply with all prison regulations, security requirements, and organisational policies and procedures. Complete all mandatory training within required timescales. Support the Director and senior management team in delivering the vision, values, and objectives of HMP Northumberland. Wear and display the organisation's identification badge at all times while on duty. Undertake any additional duties reasonably requested by the line manager. Key Accountabilities Prisoners receive compassionate and effective pastoral care, contributing to the reduction of violence, self-harm, and suicide. Prisoners of all faiths and beliefs are supported and enabled to practise their religion safely and respectfully. Effective partnerships are established with community faith groups to support rehabilitation and resettlement. Chaplaincy services contribute positively to reducing reoffending and improving prisoner outcomes. Staff and prisoners have access to appropriate pastoral and emotional support when required. Person Specification Essential Criteria Experience working in a people-facing role or with vulnerable individuals. Formal recognition and endorsement from the relevant Christian faith authority. Strong commitment to supporting people from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and faiths. Ability and willingness to work collaboratively with clergy, volunteers, and faith representatives from different faith traditions. Excellent interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills. High levels of self-motivation, resilience, and professional integrity. Ability to challenge inappropriate behaviour in a constructive and professional manner. Understanding of equality, diversity, and inclusion principles. Desirable Criteria Previous experience working within a prison, criminal justice, healthcare, chaplaincy, or similar environment. Experience managing conflict and dealing with challenging situations. Experience providing pastoral care, counselling, mentoring, or emotional support. Knowledge of rehabilitation, resettlement, and reducing reoffending initiatives.
