Embedded Systems Engineer (Part-Time to Full-Time) – Optect Ltd
Location: Remote (UK-based), onsite in Bath, or hybrid
Hours: 0.5 FTE – 1.0 FTE

Optect is developing the next generation of long-range flame detection technology and deploying it into some of the most challenging environments on Earth. We are now looking for a motivated Embedded Systems Engineer to join our team and contribute to an ESA-funded project focused on bringing real-time fire detection data from remote landscapes to the people who can act on it.
What You’ll Work On
Your initial work will support integration of Optect’s novel long-range flame detector into a complete end-to-end communications chain, including:
* local radio networks such as LoRa,
* satellite uplinks for remote connectivity, and
* web-based endpoints for monitoring and decision-making.
This role offers the opportunity to work directly under the CTO, take ownership of substantial technical components, and help deliver technology that contributes to solving one of the world’s most urgent climate challenges: wildfires.
Required
* Completed or soon-to-complete degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Telecommunications, Radio Engineering, or a closely related field — or equivalent practical experience.
* Skills in embedded programming, ideally in C for STM32, Arduino, or similar.
* Willingness to document work clearly and use revision control systems.
Nice to Have
* Experience with radio or telecommunications systems
* (professional, academic, or amateur radio experience)
* Experience with Git
* Electronics hardware skills (circuit design, PCB layout)
* Basic Python (or similar) for simple web interfaces
